Tequila, magic and rock and roll set the stage for midlife rebellion when the Committee for the Disaffected decides that the ancient art of witchcraft is the only way to rev up their boring small-town lives. Aidan desires the attentions of a handsome young musician, only to discover that he was already in love – with his bandmate. Kathy longs for financial security, but when fortune strikes, it reveals her husband’s true nature. Longing to be a respected author, Diana becomes an overnight success – but it’s her kinky erotica that everyone wants, and her humiliated husband decides to put his foot down.

At first, I wasn't quite sure where The Second Half of Life was headed, so it was slow to start for me. We learn about the three women, Aidan, Diana, and Kathy, and the friendship they have together. They call themselves the Committee of the Disaffected and meet every week to figure out how to change their lives. Each of them has their own idea of how their lives were supposed to be, and each of them feel it is smothered by living in Claiborne.

Trying to find self-fulfillment by attempting new things in their lives, they finally settle on becoming witches. These aren't your typical dark, mysterious, spell-inducing witches, mind you. Aidan, Diana, and Kathy are looking for something specific out of witchcraft. They are looking to fulfill each of their greatest wishes in life. Stumbling on a way to do just that, they find that fulfilling their deepest wishes comes at a price. All three women learn just what it means to be truly happy in life, but only through some major trials.

I felt that the plot of The Second Half of Life wasn't as quickly presented as I like in a book. It took awhile to get to the grit of the story and by that time it seemed like the book wouldn't be long enough. The heart of the story, in my opinion, was each of the women searching for what they really wanted in life, but that wasn't clear until much later in the book. Once the heart of the story came out, I loved the premise of it, however.

What The Second Half of Life lacked in speed in plot for me, it made up for it in the wonderful characters. The women were so witty and down-to-earth! I found myself laughing at and with them throughout the book. There were several POVs going on in the book, but you always knew who was speaking because the characters each had their own personality that was very well developed.

Overall, The Second Half of Life was a good read, especially if you enjoy reading coming of age books. I encourage everyone to grab a copy of The Second Half of Life.
