Should the players be successful in recovering Ymbra, Karylin will appear and attempt to reclaim her daughter by force. If the players successfully repel her attack, they continue their adventure to deliver Umbra to Inimigle. When the players attempt to do so, both Durkayle and Karylin appear and fight to reclaim their daughter while Inimigle attempts to flee with Umbra. If Inimigle succeeds in his true plan the result is that Umbra is left with a sanctuary to be protected in while the players then have to deal with two over-possessive parents. both of whom still desire to control Umbra for their own ends.

Karylin is a Succubus NPC character created by Chris Perkins who appeared in the Umbra adventure published in Dungeon magazine issue 55. Her role in this adventure was a central one, being the mother of the alu-child Umbra the players are in search of. Her history is told in detail along with statistics about her. Karylin's physical appearance is not discussed in the adventure.

Karylin conceived a child, named Umbra, with a member of the Harmonium. When she became bored with her situation, she abandoned her child. She then discovered her child had a high value and is now seeking her out. She confronts the players at one stage of the adventure in an attempt to claim her child, the results of this being in the hands of the players.

Character Information

Karylin encountered a member of the Harmonium named Durkayle in the town of Curst, a small town on the edge of Carceri. She expressed interest in the Harmonium's sense of order and embraced Durkayle's laws in exchange for protection and companionship. In truth, Karylin was in the midst of "The Urge", an irresistible desire which maternal succubi encounter and she wanted a child. Within six months, Durkayle had fathered an alu-fiend daughter named Umbra with Karylin. Soon afterwards Karylin became bored with Durkayle and the Harmonium's lawful ways and departed weeks after giving birth, leaving Umbra in Durkayle's hands.

However, Karylin then learned that alu-fiends were greatly prized in the Abyssal plane by a balor named Kalphazor who desired alu-fiend slaves and was willing to pay handsomely for them by giving small domains as prizes. She then returned and stole Umbra away with her to the Abyss. No longer under Karylin's charm spell, Durkayle sent a powerful wizard to find Umbra and return her. Karylin was about to give her child to Kalphazor when Umbra vanished into thin air. Karylin attempted to kidnap Umbra again, but was repelled by the use of magic. Although she cannot enter Durkayle's tower, Karylin was determined to recover Umbra and enlisted the aid of an old ally named Inimigle to do so for a bargain to be agreed to if he is successful. It is through this ally that the players are involved in this adventure and can come into contact with Karylin.

Should the players be successful in recovering Umbra, Karylin will appear and attempt to reclaim her daughter by force. If the players successfully repel her attack, they continue their adventure to deliver Umbra to Inimigle. When the players attempt to do so, both Durkayle and Karylin appear and fight to reclaim their daughter while Inimigle attempts to flee with Umbra for his own gain. If Inimigle succeeds in his true plan the result is that Umbra is left with a sanctuary to be protected in while the players then have to deal with two over-possessive parents. both of whom still desire to control Umbra for their own ends.
