Socothbenoth is the Demon Lord of Incest, Sexual Taboos, and Perversions, in the Dungeons and Dragons role playing game. He is also an ally of Malcanthet, the Queen of Succubi.
Description
According to the apocryphal text Armies of the Abyss, Socothbenoth resembles a handsome human male with long brown hair and the long ears of an ass. He has a long, snakelike tongue and his chest is pierced by six large barbells.
Relationships
Socothbenoth's sister Nocticula is also his lover. He lusts after the power of Graz'zt, and has allied with Malcanthet, the Queen of Succubi, against him.[1] However, he also longs to become the lover of Demogorgon, a position currently held by Malcanthet. Socothbenoth has almost managed to force Fraz-Urb'luu from his home before Fraz-Urb'luu managed to repulse Socothbenoth's army from his realm.[2]
Realm
Socothbenoth's realm, Goranthis, is cataloged as the 597th layer of the Abyss. The realm is an infinite pleasure palace that includes a sculpture garden called the Saturnalia and Socothbenoth's personal abode, the Palace of Quivering Flesh. The River Styx impinges on this domain.[3] Socothbenoth is served by advanced shadow demons known as the Shadows of Socothbenoth, who whisper and cajole those Socothbenoth favors into joining their master's service. Socothbenoth appeared in Paizo Publishing's book Book of the Damned, Vol. 2: Lords of Chaos (2010), on page 26.[4]
Publication History
Socothbenoth was one of many demon lords that was mentioned only by name in a list in the original Monster Manual II (1983).[5]
Socothbenoth was mentioned briefly in Fraz-Urb'luu's entry in "The Demonimicon of Iggwilv" series in Dragon #333 (2005),[2] and in Malcanthet's entry in Dragon #353.[1] Socothbenoth received further details in third edition in Fiendish Codex I: Hordes of the Abyss (2006).[6] His realm was described in Dragon #358 in F. Wesley Schneider's article "The River Styx" (2007).[3]
