Ariel is a dancer and she has a power over those around her. She can tempt them, and to a point make them do whatever she wants. But she discovers that it isn’t just her personality, or her body that does it. She’s a Succubus, at least partly, and a witch. And that leads to all sorts of problems for her.

Ariel herself is interesting in that there’s a battle going on within her between the need she has and any hope she has of if not controlling, then at least managing it. It’s very clear that she really has no control over herself in the first work and things get worse as the story goes on.

Then Adam arrives and he is, to be blunt, chauvinistic to the extreme. He uses his abilities to control Ariel in many ways and that brings new stresses to her and her life. As the story continues on, Adam’s attitude really tended to become grating and just became, as a whole, too… animalistic for my tastes.

While I had some issues with various minor characters, as a whole the story had a purpose and a direction to go in. There were some hot erotic moments that told a story, there is some introspective moments and as well a touch of action that characters take. There is a lot of promise in the work as a whole. But in spite of how good the characters are and the story as a whole is, there are several problems with it.

The editing of these works leaves a lot to be desires I regret. There are a lot of tense errors, spelling mistakes and wrong word usage that I found extremely distracting. As well, the dialog felt wooden and unemotional at times. I felt as if the core of the story was buried underneath too many flaws that a serious editing could have taken care of.

Those flaws, for me at least, did nothing to help the story and that should not have happened. While I understand these are free books and a professional editing wasn’t possible, I would have expected the author to take a few more passes over their writing and tighten up their prose accordingly. More the shame they did not.

Two out of five pitchforks.

Honestly both works need a serious editing. There’s so many tense problems, the conversations feel so stilted, and that takes away from the works as a whole. Now, nothing has come after these two works that I have been able to find and that’s a shame as the story is very good and it’s going places.

It just needs a firm hand on the steering wheel to guide it towards the destination.

Book Review

The following review was originally published by Tera on her Blog, A Succubi's Tale on March 29, 2015
