Regardless of the beauty they are, the passions they unleash and the temptations succubi are, there is always a price to be paid. The danger is within one’s self, a flaw they are always willing to use. Evan’s successes mean very little when Karina appears and the power of the most deadly of the succubi around him entwines itself and threatens to take all he has and more.

Following on immediately from the prior work, the main focus is the battle of wills between Evan and Karina, which is a very strong power play between them. Secrets about Evan are revealed, the truths of the succubi are stripped bare. The story twists into knots, there’s no simple path for any of the characters and that was really interesting to watch unfold.

While there are some erotic passages along the way, there’s actually very little heat in them, being a means to an end for the most part. A bit clinical at times, there’s a lack of passion which comes from the events around Evan and what Karina truly is. It doesn’t detract from the storytelling, nor does the coolness of some of these moments really cause a problem. It’s just a bit odd when compared with the prior succubi as to how odd they are.

Karina, the last of the succubi to be confronted, has been very enigmatic throughout. A mystery and power that threatens from a distance like a storm waiting to strike. Her true nature, the dominant force she is, comes out and it’s a battle of wits between her and Evan. So very present throughout the series and here she becomes something of a barrier, forcing the story to turn towards Evan and seek out who he is and what everything that has happened really means/ It’s a unique turn for her and overall it works really well.

The ending of this work, and the series as a whole, bothers me in a few ways. There’s an abrupt turn for the main character and the succubi themselves that just feels wrong with all that came before. It’s somewhat tacked onto the story and overall it didn’t work for me. But there is a small note about other succubi elsewhere that did gain my attention and I wonder about that. It’s an interesting thought and would make for perhaps another series.

The question which comes from the idea of other succubi elsewhere is one of what situations they are in, and if they are free or something else is going on. The idea of succubi playing the world around them to their amusement seems like a really good sort of story to tell.

Three and a half out of five pitchforks.

As complex and captivating as the rest of the series, it’s a very good read overall except of that epilog that I just can’t see how it fits into all that came before. Succubi being the temptresses and corruptors of this story works really well, they are fascinating in their own ways. Perhaps it would have been nice to see more of the perspective they had, to understand them a bit better than the series allowed would have benn nice. But that leaves a lot to think about.

Book Review

The following review was originally published by Tera on her Blog, A Succubi's Tale on November 24, 2024
