There are two things that Seth desires above all. One is power, the other are all the women that come calling to his nature. Both have their appeals, but being an incubus, sometimes the real problem is keeping his nature in the shadows.

The work is a series of short erotic hot flashes tied together with some political commentary and conniving by the main character who is an incubus. It’s a bit flat in tone overall, there’s a certain lack of emotional passion for the most part and as such the main character becomes a means to an end overall. Perhaps it’s best to say that the connective scenes between the erotica feel a bit tone deaf and lifeless with the erotica coming to add some needed passion and heat.

With that said, the main character, Seth, the incubus of the work, I found to be stereotypically evil, aloof, and really didn’t bring a lot to the work other than his craving need for power and sex. He is an incubus, there are hints of mind control and of course his sexual powers that overcome those he focuses on. But beyond that there’s actually very little time spent on delving into his incubus nature.

Beyond that, Seth is also so very odd in tone and character. His presence, tone of voice and overall presence took away something from the story and I think that is the real shame here. Being ruthlessly focused on a goal is one thing, but then not developing him as a character beyond just the surface leaves a lot to be desired.

Two and a half out of five pitchforks.

Overall the story was a bit of a disappointment, mostly in that it felt like a combination of an adult movie with a bit of political intrigue to tie it together. The story ends in a way that points towards the next book in the series, but that never happened. I find myself wondering if, perhaps, Seth might find himself facing a succubus opponent and that idea does interest me. But I would expect more of the same and I feel like that’s a shame with the possibilities the main character offered beyond sex scenes alone.

Book Review

The following review was originally published by Tera on her Blog, A Succubi's Tale on April 26, 2020
