The story of a soul is a complicated thing. Choices are made, paths taken, and the result can be overwhelming. The truth is something you can’t always see, and when it comes into focus, the question becomes what is that truth to you. For Lilith, the truth is only something she understands, needs, and desires.
The work is a very well written piece of fantasy adventure which focuses on the main character Laylah, nee Lilith, as the choices made in her past creep into the present. It’s very complicated, very telling in the stories within the story itself. With the adventure aspects however, it’s the deconstruction and rebuilding of Lilith herself which held me throughout. That reflection on the mythos, the stories created around it, and the secret held by Lilith herself, just made the puzzle fir together perfectly.
Lilith and Laylah are two parts of the same soul and it’s the duality, the exploration of self which is just amazing. While called evil by some, she is the mother of demons here and that’s an aspect which is used to create a perspective and intention that takes her far from being stereotypical by any means. She’s not a succubus by any means in this story, that’s not her role or purpose here. It’s not sexual or seductive a role, it’s meant to be a struggle with her nature, her want, and the singular desire that presses on her throughout.
Four and a half out of five pitchforks.
A truly amazing work from beginning to end, the mythos especially so as it offers aspects of Lilith’s story that, when considered, explain so many things and offer so much. It’s a fully realized work, though the ending left me a bit wanting given the secret Lilith herself holds within herself. Perhaps it’s best to say that a soul seeking the truth will discover more than they ever knew.
