They weren’t the main character, so it’s understood why that happened, but it just felt like a shame. The story had its moments, the heat and passion was quite a lot of fun as well. But at the same time there were points at which things seemed off somehow and that bothered me. Still, an interesting if complicated story and characters, I do think that there needs to be a third work in the series centred on Drenanian who fascinated me.

Plot Summary

Two paranormal romance authors, Emily Freemen and Selma Alvar, discover that life doesn't always go as planned and fiction is more than words on a page when they find themselves in the 1950s throwback town of Camden, Michigan.

The two women discover more than the budding publishing careers they'd hoped to create at the Romancing the Mitten book signing when they meet the town's sexy mechanic, Casper Snojason, and mesmerizing ladies' man, Kian Lucas Nordin.

Separated and struggling with the strangeness of the small town the girls work to uncover the secrets of Camden while falling deeper for the too-good-to-be-true men.

Now they just need to decide if they need to call for help or remain locked in Camden forever.

Book Review

Sometimes you make a choice and sometimes it leads you to what you never expected to find. A wrong turn, a broken ca, and a rescue brings Emily and Selma to the town of Camden. A quaint little town that feels a bit off.. and it just keeps getting weirder.

The work is a rather complicated and convoluted mystery romance fantasy with a bit of a snarky edge to it overall. There are some delightfully fun moments, some silly ones as well. At the same time the story turns into a series of hidden truths, for all of the characters really, and that tends to make things a little confusing at times.

While part of this comes to add an air of mystery, at the same time it felt a bit forced at times. There’s a sense of just trying to make excuses over and over until there’s no option but to tell the truth and with all else before, it’s a bit of a mess for the characters. It’s in the tone of the dialogue more than anything else as the words are there, but the emotions get a bit run over sometimes.

Emily, the main character, is eventually revealed to be a succubus, but that’s very shaded and unclear through most of the story and things do’t become really well settled until the last few chapters. That’s a little confusing and somewhat odd as well. Still, Emily’s powers as they come to be are unique and interesting and I thought that aspect worked well.

Kian, the main incubus of the work, seems like the most lost of a ll of th characters and it works and doesn’t for him at times. It’s the emotional shifts the repetitiveness in some of his dialogue, which bothered me somewhat. He is an incubus, the problems that creates at the beginning and middle parts of the story is fun however.

Ten comes another succubus, Drenanian, who I think could be thought of as the evil stepmother in a way. As little as she appears, there are moments when she is interning and I wonder about her. More so at the climax of the story when she gets… let’s say trapped and what happens then just made me laugh in delight with all the little appearances she made before and what that did to the main characters.

Three and a half out of five pitchforks.

The work closes in a way that ties things up for the main characters, but leaves a massive plot point unresolved. The reason for that I understand and it make sense, but with such a point made and not being brought to a conclusion, it was a bit odd. Similarly, another central character sort of dropped off the edge of the story and that bothered me.
