Plot Summary
Insomnia would be an improvement...
Imagine you’re an Incubus, a demon who needs sex not only to live, but to sleep. Now imagine you haven’t had sex in over a year. Welcome to my nightmare. I am hungry, I am tired and the only way I’m getting any much needed shut-eye is to get laid. My problem is, there’s only one woman I want: my no-nonsense assistant. The one woman I’m terrified to touch, because she’s the one woman I can’t live without.
Book Review
The following review was originally published by Tera on her Blog, A Succubi's Tale on November 10, 2017
Ryan has a problem and it’s more than just not being able to sleep for over a year. Her name is Bianca and she’s the best thing that’s ever happened to him. She’s everything he wants, everything he needs. But there’s a problem in that he’s her boss and there’s a line he doesn’t want to cross. Until, that is, there’s no other choice and Bianca shows a foolish incubus that he’s not the only one that can’t sleep.
The work is a hot flash, but before that comes to be, there’s a lot of character development, exploration of what Ryan needs and all of the reasons why he hasn’t come close to Bianca. It’s a bit heart-aching at times, but that only serves to make Ryan more full as a character. He’s more than an incubus and telling that part of him makes it a lot easier for me to ignore his hooves when his true form appears.
Ryan’s powers as an incubus are really well defined and I have to admit that I laughed at one point where his human form is described as a “condom” against his powers by Bianca. That’s the thing about this work in that when the characters are together, there’s a connection. It’s funny and it matters. There’s a real sense of them being together for a long time and knowing each other well. At least well as humans.
It’s when Ryan goes over the brink, when Bianca is shown his true nature, that the story reveals the secrets they hold. The part of Bianca’s character, in that she’s a nerd and loves comic books, just makes the entire moment so much less awkward by far. If Ryan is hesitant and unsure, the same can’t quite be said about Bianca in what she reveals as the story moves towards the climax.
That is a moment when their relationship gets where they both need it to be, even if the other didn’t see that they knew. The erotica that follows is hot, but a little quick for my liking. That’s not to say that Ryan’s delight and Bianca’s as well isn’t told, for it is. What’s missing is a little bit of intimacy at two points where I think it needed to be.
The closing of the work offers a clear path to something more, but the author didn’t return to these characters, moving onwards with the series that this work begins. I’d have loved to see more of what comes next as there’s a huge question left behind.
I loved the story, the characters were amazing. The passion and heat was everything I could have hoped. Ryan and Bianca being as unique as they are just works so well. If there’s one little dark patch in the story, that comes from a single sentence and it bothers me.
Perhaps, in my own thoughts about what comes next, the one thing that might make it perfect would happen. I’m absolutely sure, Bianca being the nerd she is, would be more than happy for it to be.
Four out of five pitchforks.
Well written, lovely heat and an excellent read. There’s just one thing missing to make it all that I wanted and I wish that might have been.
