Book Review
The following review was originally published by Tera on her Blog, A Succubi's Tale on May 11, 2025
There’s really nothing like moving into a new home. Except if the new neighbour catches your attention and your dreams are so very, very occupied. For Paige the real problem is that her neighbour is an incubus and he wants something from her. As for Paige, she’s not so sure about that.
The work is something of a star-crossed relationship affair with a bit of magic and incubus themes stirred in to being some heat. It’s a bit of a dry read, the characters don’t seem to mesh together in the way they should when the truth comes out and that’s a shame.
Caleb, the incubus of the work, is rather overbearing and at times dearly unlikable. He is very much a dominant incubus, with a very clear idea of what he wants. But with that said, he’s too single minded and that took away for me a lot of what could have made him interesting.
What’s missing here is the emotional connection forming between the main characters. It feels too clinical, too abrupt and, honestly, too much like a relationship that is forced instead of being something that naturally forms. While that seems to be part of the way incubi are in this universe, it still just didn’t work for me.
A forced bond is still a forced one. It’s not intimate, regardless of the heat in the story, nor does it feel like both of the main characters are equally wanting it to happen. Past that, the way the story closes, the sudden reveal and explanation felt tacked on and didn’t give what should have been an intimate and passionate moment it’s due.
I was expecting something more than the story revealed, both in the characters, especially Caleb. The work could have been more of a tease, more of a give and take from both of the main characters than what it became. Considering that Paige is a witch, that would have been so very interesting to explore beyond how things were.
Three out of five pitchforks.
I feel that the work could use some editing to bring passion between Paige and Caleb. Both the dialogue and the scenes themselves need heat, desire, passion and most of all, a connection rather than a battle. I wish that the Caleb was more appealing, that would have made this such a better read. There are also a number of word errors which also took me out of the story a bit too often. It could have been, and I still wish it had, been a very good story with a bit more effort in finding the voices of the characters’ passions.
