The work is a very short, what I call a pamphlet, fantasy story in a historical setting that has a good deal of reality mixed into it. It’s not erotica exactly, though there are a scene or two in passing that come to the edge of being so. It’s more a story of a succubus caught in a trap, the events that happen around her, and how she becomes a pivot in the shifting sands of time and history.

Mara, the succubus of the work, really doesn’t become more than a shadow in the story. She is present, but she is commanded to obey, she acts, and then the story moves onwards. As such the story really doesn’t get into her story, how she got in the situation she is in, or really much of anything else. There is one scene where she talks to the single mortal that can resist her, and that was so dearly interesting. but it appears, ends, and then has little effect overall to what happens.

The work needs another editing pass for all of the little spelling mistakes, the oddities of the storytelling as well. Beyond that, the events that unfold are so quickly past and done that there’s nothing really to make of them before they are forgotten and the story moves on. With how interesting the premise is, this jus feels like so much is missing to get to the end of the story.

Two and a half out of five pitchforks.

The mixing of history and fantasy I thought was really well done, but with how short the story is, there’s so much missing otherwise. The story could have been expanded upon, Mara could have told more about herself, perhaps how she came to be where she was. So many interesting questions that never had their moment and it’s a shame.

Book Review

The following review was originally published by Tera on her Blog, A Succubi's Tale on January 4, 2026

A gift is not always a gift, it can be the most dangerous of traps if one is not careful. In the distant past, a Chinese emperor is given a succubus as a plaything, but Mara is anything but that as all around her will come to discover.
