The work is an interesting mix of succubus horror erotica and psychological drama with a bit of adventure around the edges. Very fast paced, the narrative pushes the story and characters towards the climax in a way that offers hints of erotica but makes them within the evil that’s created as the story progresses.

Madrena, the succubus of the work, is very much a stereotypically evil character, there’s nothing that exists within her otherwise. She is very much a temptation that others fall to and then the horror aspects come in a way that leaves some of what happens to the imagination. There’s a smattering of information too about her through internal monologue which offers a lot about her unsaid, but there’s really no time in the story to delve into her other than fleetingly.

The wordplay between the main characters is very well done, the narrative as each plays their part in the story is really very well done. But with all that, Madrena just comes across as just an evil presence focused on her need and not a lot else. At times there’s a hint of plotting that was a delight, but then she just turns towards the evil and horror aspects of herself and it’s both expected and somewhat thin.

The tone of the work becomes something of a slasher/stalker horror work which will be interesting to many I’m sure. I would have liked more of Madrena’s aspects as a succubus to be played out further. There’s aspects of mind control and domination which appear, but they tease in the moment before the work turns to the horror in a rush to get to the next scene and the next challenge between the main characters before the climax of the story arrives.

Three and a half out of five pitchforks.

Where the story ends leaves a very obvious storyline to follow and it offers some interesting possibilities. Given that the main character, and Madrena for that matter, are very much a mystery in many ways, that’s intriguing. Perhaps that will happen sometime, perhaps not. We shall see.

Plot Summary

Madrena Marigold - Patient #666

I am not crazy.

There is another purpose why I am locked away in the Jocose Academy or what I prefer to call Madrena's Loco Cabasa.

I am a rather choosy succubus and prefer my men educated and with a huge talent. What they did with that talent didn't matter so long as I was able to get what I needed to stay eternal and drop-dead gorgeous.

All I need is their souls.

Will I continue my eternal reign as the soul-retrieving queen?

Or will the new counselor, Matthew Archibald, be the one to end my reign?

Book Review

The following review was originally published by Tera on her Blog, A Succubi's Tale on September 20, 2024

Matthew has been hunting her for ages, revenge is all that matters for him. But she is a succubus and her hunger is as endless as her temptations. Both are relentless, driven by who they are and the past they have, for better or worse, their fates are tied.
