Iltani as a character has her flaws, but the main thing that got to me was the lack of in depth background on her. There was almost a summary of her life, but little else which was somewhat disappointing. The other part of my disappointment in her is that while she has an effect on Rihat , mostly driving him mad with lust for her, otherwise there is little Succubus in her to see.

Blood Hero EBook Cover, written by Madeleine Drake

Blood Hero is an eBook written by Madeleine Drake. One of the main characters in the story, Iltani, is described as being a ardat-lili. She is a demi-goddess that lives on the energies of lust and sex. Much of her powers and effects on the other main character in the story Rihat, are similar to the powers a Succubus wields upon others.

Plot Summary

When Rihat, a soldier in Babylon's army, discovers that his village is being terrorized by an akhazu demon, he seeks help at Marduk's temple. He meets Iltani, a demigoddess who's been cursed by Ishtar to live as an ardat-lili, enslaved by lust, a night-maiden who feeds on sexual energy.

Iltani offers Rihat the power to slay the akhazu, if he'll agree to serve her every need without question. But will the price of that power be more than Rihat can bear to pay?

Book Review

By TeraS

I have to admit that I was expecting a lot more from this story that I got from it. That's not to say it wasn't a decent read, just that some of it bothered me a lot.

Iltani as a character has her flaws, but the main thing that got to me was the lack of in depth background on her. There was almost a summary of her life, but little else which was somewhat disappointing. The other part of my disappointment in her is that while she has an effect on Rihat, mostly driving him mad with lust for her, otherwise there is little Succubus in her to see.

Two things that felt to me like the vampire myth and the succubus myth were mashed up a bit were that, one, she becomes incorpal during the day and two, that she feeds on blood.

That's important to the hero in the story Rihat as well. He gets transformed into a being that looks much like a vampire, he even has to stay out of sunlight and be in a coffin during the day, which doesn't connect with the Succubus or sex demon myths.

The story itself feels too short, rushed, almost as if what mattered was getting from point A to point B as fast as possible leaving the development of the characters in the story to being wants, needs, and lusts without much understanding. Which was a shame as both Iltani and Rihat are interesting to me.

I would have liked to see more of them.
