This is a modern day story about an Order that was formed in the 1300's and it's last living guardian. They are in charge of the pentacles of mercury and protect vessels (special humans that have a different genetic make-up) and normal people from possession (but, in most cases, those possessed are exterminated). There are also lost souls that are able to rise and possess humans. Anyway, the risers/demons are hunting down a vessel for their deity to inhabit so that she can return to earth and consume everything. But, they will also need one of the five pentacles of mercury to open the gates to hell and let her out.
The guardian of the Order has to find her godfather's daughter and keep her under constant watch from possession and abduction while making sure that the risers/demons don't obtain any of the pentacles (the fifth pentacle in particular).
In this book, the good guys aren't so good, but at least their intentions are good, in spite of their delivery.
The main character struggles from psychosis because she has been tortured and witnessed the deaths of the people she loved. She still has to find the strength to lead the Order against the risers (lost souls) and demons. You can see the characters evolve/devolve over time which is very rare in most books.
The author braids everything together nicely. Scott's use of detail makes you feel like you are there. I can't wait to read the next book.
