Book Review

The following review was originally published by Tera on her Blog, A Succubi's Tale on June 18, 2023

The woods are deep and dark with many mysteries hidden within. Jake shouldn’t go there, shouldn’t be drawn deeper, couldn’t possibly enter a forbidding cave. But Lilith awaits, she cannot be resisted, and her needs will claim Jake for her own.

The work tells a story that has some anime or hentai aspects mixed with succubus seduction and mind control. The focus is entirely on Jake, the main character, being drawn to Lilith, the succubus of the story. What follows is an erotica mind control story which turns Jake into a pet who obeys his mistress and gives whatever she desires.

The erotica slowly simmers through much of the story, Jake’s submission to Lilith being drawn out piece by piece until he tips over the edge and Lilith claims her prize. Where the story falters a bit is in the telling of the story. There’s clearly heat trying to get on the page, but the dialogue reads very flat when it shouldn’t. Similarly the description of the two characters intertwined tells of what they do, but many times doesn’t take the erotica from simmering to boiling over, which is a shame.

Lilith is not a stereotypical succubus, there’s really not a sense of evil in her words and actions. She is very much the seductress, using her powers to capture Jake, and then command him. It’s this part of the story, Lilith drawing him in, sinking her claws into his thoughts and bending him to her desires that works so dearly well. There is mention of Lilith nibbling at Jake’s life, so she isn’t just interested in sex with him, and this reflects back on an aspect of her being a succubus of course. But there is also tenderness afterwards which I think offers something special which really isn’t explored as much as I wanted it to be.

Lilith is wonderfully seductive and the story has some lovely moments of heat and desires. The missing part however is the lack of emotional connection in the dialogue. The words are there, but the heat isn’t. Similarly the narrative could have expressed more of Lilith’s powers and Jake’s submission. It would be interesting to learn more about Lilith, perhaps there will be another work with her appearing. There’s a lot untold about her and a lot of her nature still left to explore.

Three and a half out of five pitchforks.

The ending is a bit disappointing considering all that came before. There’s something missing in the words and emotions which bothered me. Still, this is a very cute story of succubus seduction with a lot of emphasis on the mind control aspects. I’d have liked perhaps to see more of Lilith before Jake appeared, to see things from her perspective. There’s a lot of fun here, but another edit to bring more heat would make this work much better still.
