Plot Summary
Kiss a frog, and he might turn into a prince. Kiss a handsome stranger and he transforms — into a gargoyle?
I'm not your average succubus. Instead of hitting the clubs and mingling with strangers, I spend my nights alone on my sofa, with a book and my bad-tempered cat. But my life energy is running dry, and the Paranormal Administration is hot on my trail. Suddenly I have a deadline of three days to find a suitable partner.
Luckily, fate dices Felix Harris at my feet. The filthy rich and overworked CEO would be the perfect candidate, tall, ginger, heart-stopping smile — and leaving in a few days.
However, a terrible curse weighs on him, as I quickly find out. And although the attraction between us sparks like an iron foundry, touching him spells trouble. But with the clock ticking and my energy waning, Felix is more than willing to play the role of my gallant savior, and sure enough, as soon as we kiss, chaos ensues.
A delicious kind of chaos, that comes with wings and fangs, rocky hard muscles and searing hot kisses. And I can't deny the butterflies in my belly every time we touch.
But the authorities are counting down the hours until I run out of juice, and then his recent past is paying a surprise visit to shake things up. Are we really up for this? When push comes to shove, will he run for the hills, or catch me when I fall?
Book Review
The following review was originally published by Tera on her Blog, A Succubi's Tale on June 28, 2024
Mae isn’t like the other succubi, and she’s rather happy with that being so. Happier with a good book, it’s starting to tell on her and time is running out. Perhaps something will change, perhaps her knight in shining armour will come to take her away. The problem are the dragons to be faced and the dark space within her that doesn’t want to let go.
The work is a slow burn romance novel with the focus being on the two main characters Mae and Felix and follows their awkward, but dearly cute relationship as it grows and transforms. Much of the story is dearly sweet and the missteps and discovering that takes place allows for a lot of character development which I enjoyed.
The erotic aspects and scenes have a lot of emotion, it’s not sex for the sake of it and that was refreshing. It’s tender but there are also moments of sharper aspects of domination and submission between the main characters that fit them well. There’s a good deal of time spent in trying to figure one another out and the result comes out in the heat and passion between the two that I loved.
Mae, the succubus of the work, is not at all a stereotypical succubus. She’s very much herself, she knows what she wants, but then there’s a certain amount of self criticism that keeps getting in the way. Now, that’s obviously part of the story, but at the same time it becomes a bit worn around the edges when that shouldn’t have been. While Maw is a succubus, and it matters in the plot of the work, she really doesn’t bring her power as a succubus to the fore and honestly that’s part who she is.
There is an incubus as well, Johnathan, who is eminently dislikable from the beginning. While he drives the plot forward, it’s the hints of the society that the succubi and incubi exist in that interested me in this universe. It’s barely touched on and would have been interesting to see more of, but sadly it wasn’t.
While the overall story worked really well, and the journey the main characters took was really interesting, at times things felt rather forced. That’s mainly in the conflicts that occurred with the minor characters at some points and it just didn’t work well. Perhaps that’s a reflection of the dislike I had for them, but at the same time there was an enough self recrimination for the main characters to deal with and make peace with too.
Four out of five pitchforks.
A lovely slow burn romance that offers a lot and was well told. As this is the second work in the series, I’m not expecting them to return, but it would be nice to peek in and see how they are managing. There’s nothing quite like a true love story told well, and this one really was.
