Plot Summary
Orion and Lu were the best in their field and nearly untouchable, until everything changed overnight, and they turned into enemies who split ways. Ten years later, they find themselves hunting down the same demon, but for very different reasons.
When these two hunters become the prey, can Orion and Lu set aside their hate and work together one last time, or is their past going to burn their future to ashes?
Blades are out and runes are charged—it’s time to put an end to a decade long feud that may leave more than a vengeful demon screaming in their wake.
Book Review
The following review was originally published by Tera on her Blog, A Succubi's Tale on November 12, 2024
Lu has problems and things aren’t getting any better. Being cursed by a succubus wasn’t good, beholden to a mage wasn’t much better. But now the man she once loved has returned after ten years and things can only get worse from there. People talk about love-hate relationships, but what makes them happen in the first place is less important than trying to deal with one’s own demons within.
The work is a well told story of adventure, fantasy and romance with a bit of a succubus theme around the edges to add heat between the main characters along the way. Very fast paced, there’s really little time for the story to pause and consider before the next crisis appears and thrusts the characters towards the next conflict, sexual or otherwise, they have to deal with.
The erotica simmers in the background for much of the story, slowly building until it crests in a couple of scenes which are both very hot and very intimate. It’s not over the top by any means and honestly, if it had been I think it would have done a real disservice the story itself. There’s meaning and passion when the main characters become entwined, and the scene played out in the strip club was just perfect in so many ways.
Lu, who is described as being cursed by a succubus, can’t really be seen as one. She has some aspects of the powers of a succubus, as well as the need for sex to live, but beyond that she has no horns or tail. It’s something less than being her nature and existence than it is a craving that gets worse and worse for her, eventually bringing her and Orion together and cracking open the mystery of the story and why things happened as they did.
The part that’s missing for me at least, is the moment when Lu was cursed by the succubus. It’s mentioned in passing here and there. but it’s not detailed. I think that’s a shame for what that could have added overall. The succubus that cursed her is given a name, but otherwise she’s a shadow of a memory. I think a passage with the battle, to add something more to the succubus, would have given another layer to the story.
Three and a half out of five pitchforks.
This isn’t a succubus story so much as it is a story with a character that has some succubus aspects to them. It’s more flavour for the erotica and the overall plot than anything else. Written well, the story is a delight and the characters are really interesting, but there’s really not that much of a succubus story here.
