Book Review

The following review was originally published by Tera on her Blog, A Succubi's Tale on March 28, 2025

Darkness takes many forms and passions and becoming entangled in the darkness brings still more. Emiliano’s soul is so very dark and being in the presence of the succubus Camilla makes them both so much darker still. The price to be paid is not theirs alone, and when the tale is told, none will be the same.

The work is a very complex and involved story of horror, betrayal and dark attraction. It’s not erotica focused overall, though there are some moments where darker erotic tones do appear. From the beginning it’s clear that all of the characters are dark in some way and this becomes a running theme throughout. There’s really no light to be found, though really with how the characters are written there can’t be.

The complex relationship between Emiliano, the main character and Camilla, the succubus of the work, binds the story together well and how that develops and symbiotic relationship between the two I thought was fascinating to see unfold to the climax and close of the story.

Camilla is a very dark and evil succubus character, more of a demon than a seductress much of the time. That’s not to say she doesn’t play to her strengths to be evil. There is a seductive aspect to her but it’s passed over many time s to get the horror and dark events that swirl around her.

It is an interesting story, but so very dark in tone, characters and storytelling. As such it dances on the edge of horror very often and I found it a bit of a difficult read at times for the tone and dialogue. As a work of what I think of as light horror, it’s well done, but as a succubus story it leaves a lot to be desired.

Three out of five pitchforks.

Though the horror aspects I didn’t enjoy very much, I’d like to see this story continue, if for no other reason than how things end leaves that door open to be explored. Perhaps if it is there needs to be more time spent in telling of succubi in this universe and certainly delve into Camilla more in her character and motivations than has been here.
