Plot Summary

Vincent returns to a place that has been calling for him, or more correctly, she has been. Jessie is a succubus, but she is Vincent’s lover and reason for all that he has done. Truths are bared, the path is set, and what comes next is unknown and unseen by both of them.
The most telling thing about this opening work in the series is how riveting Vincent is, how torn his thoughts are, and all that he has been through that is never really explained. It is hinted at, suggested, even enough to say that none of it was good. But in spite of this, who he is, what he is, really, doesn’t come out clearly. As such, he is a mystery, but in all of the characters he encounters, it’s clear that he’s well known and more.
There’s a certain satisfying change in him which Jesse appears and in that moment the facade that surrounds him gets taken away and who he is, what and who he needs and wishes for comes out quite well. There’s a connection between himself and Jesse that is both sexual, but also almost soul soothing in a way.
Jesse herself is a succubus, Vincent calls her that, but not in a poor way, simply a fact of life, a agreement to be made, and then the story continues with the two lovers entwining themselves in their passions. There are some really fascinating comments by Jessie, things, like Vincent, suggested and hinted at, but not fully told. It’s a shame really because there’s something there, something meaning to be said, but the story doesn’t allow for it and so the story moves away from story into the erotica.
There is wonderful heat between Jesse and Vincent, one being in control, then the other, and then there comes the moment, for a singular moment, when they have what they desire for but an instant before their reality comes crashing into them once more. The erotica isn’t so much being that of a succubus with another, but rather two lovers together and I think that set an excellent tone against the rest of the work in which both characters are alone in their own worlds.
Written well, lovely heat, two very strong characters and a story that offers a lot for the future in the series. A bit mysterious, a little lost on occasion, but that are the characters as well. I would have liked to know more about Jesse, some of her background, more than what was told at least. The same can be said about Vincent in that there wasn’t quite a lot said about him and I hope going forwards those secrets will come out.
I’ll give this three and a half out of five pitchforks.
A deep, well written, passionate story with two characters that are so wonderful together in their needs and fears. There are still manky secrets about Vincent and Jesse and I hope, sometime, they will be told fully.
At the time of this review, the second work in the series had been released and I did read it as well. Jessie does not appear in this second work, and as such I won’t be reviewing that work save to say that I didn’t feel it stood up as well as the first work did. If felt somewhat lost, uneven, and unfocused. Still, there is a chance that Jessie will turn up again, and I will be following the series to see if she does so. I hope so.
