This book made a welcome change from all the other vampire books around at the moment, it offers an alternative view of what it is to be a vampire. Antonia Correlli isn't like any other vampire, she has empathy and insight and has certain abilities which she has honed over 600 years, that enable her to live as a human being. In this story she is working as a nurse on a hospital ship in the Mediterranean in the First World War. Jens Kuhn describes her in a way that makes the reader understand, and even forgive, the way she uses humans. She not only feeds from them but does it in a way that they enjoy, and even crave, yet she also uses her powers to heal. She discovers a mystery on board the ship and it is while she's investigating this mystery that she develops feelings for the mysterious captain of the ship who isn't as he seems. Jens Kuhn combines history and magic and adventure, the result of which is a very good read. I look forward to reading about Antonia's many other adventures.
