Book Review

The following review was originally published by Tera on her Blog, A Succubi's Tale on June 18, 2021

Tanya’s fantasies have given her something impossible. Everything she’s ever wanted in a lover resided in her mind once, but over time her wishes became an incubus to her desires. But when the truth comes to pass, and Tanya sees what she has brought to life, what does that mean for Ziyan, the incubus of her dreams and now something more.

The work reads very much as a coming of age story mixed with some very strong BDSM themes on occasion. Tanya is dominant by far and Ziyan is very much her enthralled submissive throughout the story. It’s how the relationship transforms, much in the same way as both of them do, that gives this work so much life and passion. It’s not simple erotica, though there is delightful heat. It’s more in the way the two are told in the story, the choices made and, in time, the truths they both see.

It’s not a typical incubus story about falling to needs, and really that’s the main thing here. It has that aspect to it, but this does not rule the story or force either main character to be untrue to themselves. When they cry out in sadness, it rings true. When they beg for the other, it’s a truly felt need. The passion isn’t what matters, it’s what the reality of their situation is and how much effort Tanya must, not needs, to give for Ziyan’s sake. The emotional connection is ever present and it just gives the story so much depth and unexpected moments to enjoy.

Simply a captivating, intelligent, passionate work of writing and one that I truly appreciate. Emotionally draining at times, the tragedy and excitement mesh into one of the best works this year. I’d wish for a bit more, mostly in the “what comes after” sort of way, but even so, this is a wonderful work that I do recommend for its uniqueness and powerful storytelling.

Five out of five pitchforks.

Highly recommended, a work with fully realized characters with a story to tell. The twists are amazing and open things to be all they should be. Never stereotypical and in that I was the most thrilled.
