Plot Summary
Draven is an incubus with one simple desire for his love life: a challenge. What he doesn’t expect is to be challenged quite so strongly by none other than the local priest, Father Theodore Chapman.
Father Theodore is only looking for friendship, and he tells the matchmaker as much. But when a small misunderstanding leads to a big mistake, Theodore finds himself at the mercy of Draven’s charms.
A demon’s corrupting power can go only so far and though Draven’s sunk his claws into him, Theodore has to decide his own fate. Draven must live with whatever choice Theodore makes, though a life without his beloved is not a life worth living.
Book Review
The following review was originally published by Tera on her Blog, A Succubi's Tale on September 6, 2018
The soul is a complex swirl of need, desire, desperation and, if one is so very lucky, there might be another soul who fits perfectly into your own. For Theodore, the questions are many and his beliefs are in question. For Draven, the question isn’t who he is, but who is missing and can he discover them.
The work is a very complex, emotional and quite thought provoking story of m/m erotica with something akin to a romance, but one that is peppered with a great deal of self-loathing, need, expectation and something close to despair. Very much a roller coaster of issues within and without both main characters, there’s just something about the two of them talking things over that I found so very attractive and unique.
The erotica has lovely heat when it comes to pass, it doesn’t feel odd or misplaced either. The emotions are raw and unfettered, but as well there’s the need of each to see themselves for who they are and come to terms with that. Passion for passions sake is a bit bland, but this isn’t that by far.
Draven, the incubus of the work, is quite delightful. Horns, tail and wings are there, but there’s also a lot of time spent in telling about what it is like for him to exist in a world where the supernatural and human worlds coexist. It’s actually quite telling to see the world through his eyes and experience the highs and lows he sees every day. Like Theodore, there’s a part missing for him, but it takes such a long time to get from simple desire to understanding that there is more beyond that. Perhaps, in a way, the discovery that love is better than lust makes all the difference.
Three and a half out of five pitchforks.
It’s such a moving and telling story of encounters, self-discovery, and coming to terms with oneself. I do wish that the climax of Theodore’s plot was handled a bit differently, however. The final choice made, and how that played out is mentioned in a few brief sentences and honestly a flashback to what happened might have been more impactful. Quite a telling read, but nonetheless I feel like there was something written and then taken out of the story. I can’t help but wonder what that might have been.
