Book Review

The following review was originally published by Tera on her Blog, A Succubi's Tale on April 19, 2022

There are questions about heaven and hell that Thalassia speaks, but are never really answered. A command given brings her to discover something about angels she cannot abide by. The decision to spare a succubus brings them both to be cast from their homes and hunted for their decision. Loving another needs no reason and doing the right thing is never wrong.

The work is a very interesting mixture of theology and myth, which is something that personally I enjoy very much. Thalassia has her innocence but as well she’s very clear on her belief in what’s right which sets her path in the story. Her willfulness, the need to be better, to show that there is right and wrong even in heaven itself, tells a lot about her.

The succubus of the work, Temperance is just as fascinating a character to watch grow and learn as the story unfolds. She is a succubus, but she’s something more within herself which defines her path in a unique way. She’s not really so much evil as a foil to Thalassia in which the meaning of the story comes through.

There’s very little erotica, it’s not the focus of the work, but really not having much brings the telling of the story into a sharper focus that works well. The focus is a fantasy adventure which is enjoyable overall, but it could be so much more.

There’s a lot to like in this story but at the same time it’s too short for all that happens. It feels like a summary of a larger story, which in a way it is. That said, I’d honestly like the author to take this work and expand on it. Give more to Temperance and Thalassia’s connection, the love between them, the struggles they faced.

Four out of five pitchforks.

There’s so much story to tell here and allowing that to come to the fore, not in a rush, but in whatever time it needs to do so really should be. Some stories tell us a lesson to remember, this is one of those by far.
