Plot Summary
University life can be a real grind, and for twenty-two-year-old Dane Staley that means long hours in the library and not a lot of time for a social life. Not that he’s complaining. As a self-confessed bookworm, the library is a place of comfort for him. That is until he goes in search of research materials in a little used section of the lower level and his life changes forever.
Most people’s eyes aren’t ever opened to the reality that humans aren’t the only inhabitants of this world. How will Dane cope when he’s confronted with the truth and everything that comes along with inadvertently binding himself to a supernatural being? Will he succumb to the pressure or rise to the occasion?
Book Review
The following review was originally published by Tera on her Blog, A Succubi's Tale on October 27, 2023
Dane prefers to be close to the books in the library and his passions can be found within the pages. A discovery leads to the accidental summoning of a succubus named Maeve, the revelation that the world around him isn’t what he think it is as well. But there’s more than that to be found, both good and bad. But with all else, he also discovers something he never expected, that there is someone to love.
The work is a deeply complex story of fantasy, adventure, love and lust that turns in a lot of unexpected directions. From the firs page the characters are fully formed with personality and their history provides a place for the series to jump from. Quick paced, there’s really not many points where the story pauses, save for moments when reflection by the main character Dane is needed. With that comes a lot of plot threads that wave through the work and become tangled together often.
While there are erotic scenes, they aren’t over the top or feel out of place. For the characters they make sense, offer points at which there can be some character development as well. The focus and heat is more romantic and explorative than being sex alone, which just adds so much to the relationship that is created over the course of the story.
Maeve, the succubus of the work, is simply a delight. From the first moment she’s both temptress and teacher, which does slowly turn towards other considerations as things progress between her and Dane. She’s not stereotypical by any means, and the descriptions of her past, what makes her different, and her focus on Dane were captivating. It’s especially wonderful to see her character change over time, her needs and desires shift, and where that takes her by the close of the work is really dramatic.
The writing is very good, there are but a few points at which a bit more passion in the dialogue, or a bit more time spent in the story exploring Dane’s newly found universe might have been a good thing. The main characters are really well written, though a few of the minor, and clearly evil ones, could have been fleshed out more. It’s not they had to be less evil, it’s more that they just didn’t have quite the same spark the characters on Dane’s side did.
There’s a lot to enjoy here, for the story, the characters and the overall plot that sets up the series going forwards. It’s very much a page turner and the mixture of seriousness and hilarity just brings together a really well told story.
Four out of five pitchforks.
The work ends on a point that leaves a lot of threads dangling and things to wonder about. The characters have changed over the story and that is really telling for how the rest of the series may go. I do want to see what happens with Maeve of course, not just in getting over what happened at the close, but how her transformation contuses and what does it really mean? The next work will be something I will be looking for, there seems to be an incubus appearing in it, and I hope they might not at all stereotypical, but I’m not holding out a lot of hope in that. But one never knows.
