Plot Summary
After throwing a well-deserved hex at a human, 27-year-old Lex is required to return to her coven to await trial. Is it coincidence or fate that she returns to her hometown on the one night a year that a Briar Coven witch can summon her fated mate? But Lex has avoided partaking in the summoning for the last nine years, and she certainly has no intention of doing it this Samhain. Lex is determined to keep her head down and see out this trial... Until she accidentally summons her mate... Who just so happens to be an incubus demon.
Lochran has grown tired of hunting for his meals. Like all the demons of his clan, he returns to the shadow realm on Samhain in the hope that this might be the year he will be summoned by his fated mate. Too bad that, when the smoke clears and the most beautiful witch he’s ever seen is glaring back at him, she’s telling him it was a mistake.
Book Review
The following review was originally published by Tera on her Blog, A Succubi's Tale on February 2, 2025
When things go wrong for Lex, they really go off the rails. Her ex-boss was a nightmare, and teaching him a lesson was worth it, even if she had to go home and face the music from her witch family. If that was all, she could deal with it, but the home she lives in had different ideas and summoning Lex’s perfect mate has to be another thing. The thing is, Lochran might be an incubus, but he’s as much in search of something more like she is. Perhaps, somehow, they’ll both figure out themselves and each other before something else goes off the rails.
The work is a really well told fantasy-magic romance which has amazing characters, a story that holds you to the story, and gives time for everything to mesh together by the lovely close. It’s not simple, the main character Lex is a bit of a mess because of events around herm, which is completely understandable, and this puts up a lot of barriers that she and Lochran, the incubus of the work, have to sort themselves through.
There are some perfect erotic scenes between them both, mixing their incubus and succubus natures and how that affects them. Beyond that, there’s just enough exploration and exposition carried in the plot and the character development to add a bit of succubus and incubus flavour.
As for Lex and Lochran, their natures come out well, there’s a bit of tail and wings for Lochran, for Lex there’s nothing physical to be seen. But beyond the physical, it is their internal monologue, the reactions they have to each other, which have lovely heat and passions.
There is one point in the story which did feel forced, a bit tacked on, but as well was somewhat telegraphed before it happened. i can understand it, accept it, but then I wonder about it. As a means of closure in the story it makes sense, but at the same time I might have liked something better.
Four out of five pitchforks.
The work ends in a way that sets up the series to follow and I think that will be interesting. I would like to know quite a lot more about the succubi and incubi world than has been revealed so far. More so, getting further into the witch community and how things work would also be really nice to see. I’m hopeful that the main characters in this work will carry forward or at least make the occasional appearance. Regardless, this was a lovely read and I will be looking for the next work in the series when it appears.
