Plot Summary
I’m Reiley MacEwen—struggling author and abnormal human. When I’m writing, I’m not a freak who sees demons. I’m just a storyteller with a vivid imagination.
But my haunted past catches up to me in one of Scotland’s iconic nightclubs. Unlike the rest of his brethren, Kade doesn’t try to kill me. He shatters my fragile world. Only my determination to beat him stops my livelihood from crumbling.
When he appears at my door, wounded and vulnerable, I have a choice to make: take my chances against the other demons hunting me, or ally with the hotter-than-hell incubus who tried to ruin my books. After everything Kade’s put me through, resisting his magic should be easy…
Except one touch is all it takes to spark a forbidden passion that could save or destroy us both.
Book Review
The following review was originally published by Tera on her Blog, A Succubi's Tale on November 19, 2024
Reiley’s life has been nothing but a struggle, the world seems to be against her and always so. But there’s a glimmer of hope in her writing, a hope that something better might come one day. But then Kade appears and her world is turned upside down and things can only get worse. But in all of the darkness, light can be found. It’s a question of believing in it when it’s in front of you.
The work is a romance-adventure fantasy with a strong incubus erotica tone overall. Very fast paced, the story and characters have little time to reflect or consider before the next crisis or adventure smashes into them. While the erotic tone hovers over the main characters, the tension between them is palatable in every scene and thought, it manages to not overcome the storytelling or plot which could have easily happened.
Kade, the incubus of the work, is a delightfully complicated character overall. At times, especially at the beginning, he is eminently unlikeable, there’s a point where the front drops between him and Reiley and the character development I’d been hoping for came into focus.
Kade’s incubus aspects, in his nature and powers, are rather unique, some of which I found fascinating and very unexpected. Similarly the shifting nature between him and Reiley with regards to the erotic connection between them made him so very interesting and a far stronger character as the story progressed.
The mythos, both for Kade and his kind and Reiley and her hidden past as it is revealed, offer more depth than it felt like was possible at the beginning of the story. Their development, the discovery of their own needs and passions, and the confrontation that came from that, was just captivating.
Four out of five pitchforks.
Being this work is noted as the first in a new series by this author, I’m not expecting either Reiley or Kade to ever make a reappearance. How their story closed really doesn’t really need to be taken a lot further, though it would be interesting. At some point I expect there will be a succubus and the thought is intriguing with Kade and his nature. Regardless pf that possibility, it’s a really well told story and worth a read in many ways.
