Book Review

The following review was originally published by Tera on her Blog, A Succubi's Tale on March 3, 2024

In an instant, the lives of Lilith and Ashley are upended and changed. Human and succubus switch bodies and both are lost within their new selves. But time is a teacher, lessons are learned, new paths forged. It’s never the journey alone that defines oneself, it’s where it takes you and what you discover.

The work is a short tale which creates a mythos and world around the two main characters, telling of what happens to them, but without a word of dialogue told. It’s something of a fairy tale, in a way, exploring the characters and their world while transforming them not just physically but in their minds and souls. That’s a really involved and captivating tale, told really well.

This isn’t a work of erotica, far from it. It feels like a framework around a story meant to summarize events and how things developed. Perhaps a fantasy adventure with a message would work as a description. The writing is passionate in the telling, the characters grow, they become so much more than who they were at the beginning and I liked that very much.

Lilith, the succubus of the story, has her origins hinted at and after switching bodies with Ashley, she’s a succubus in a human body, lost and learning. Similarly, Ashley is a human in the form of a succubus and there’s a bit of exploration of what she’s dealing with.

But this isn’t so much a story about succubi than it is about two characters, one of whom is a succubus. Or rather the characters take turns being one. The story is a bit convoluted, at times seeking a path to the next part of the work, but that feels right considering what they are going through. Without a word of dialogue there is an emotional connection that worked well, and kept my interest to see what came next.

Three out of five pitchforks.

It’s really far too short given all of the story that’s hinted at. Expanding on that, breathing life into the characters, telling of their personalities, their voices, really feels like what is missing here. It’s an interesting story, there’s a lot to explore. But it feels too much like a summary of a larger work and that’s the story I’d really like to see.
