Plot Summary
Chief Petty Officer John "Bronco" Andrews only meant to stay one night in Vegas for a little R&R before resuming his duties as a US Navy SEAL in Coronado. Bronco is in a world of hurt and it’s up to Lindsey to get him out when a misstep takes him onto a world where he’s all but powerless and at his captor’s mercy. The escape itself isn’t where the problems are, it’s both of them coming to terms with knowing themselves, learning about each other and having to deal with the nightmares that haunt them both.
This is a romance, a lovely and well told one that I enjoyed for the characters, the heat and the way things unfolded. There is a struggle for both characters to overcome, it works well and I enjoyed the story throughout.
However, this isn’t a story about succubi, and they are only tangentially involved in the story. If I hadn’t read the following work first, I would have never figured out that Aislynn was a succubus, or what her position in this universe was. That said, having read ahead, as it were, the hints of her power, her attitude about what happens to Bronco in her presence is very telling.
Still, Aislynn’s not really part of this story, only serving as part of a means to allow for an information dump to happen. She entered and left the work in a very short time, having really little impact on the story overall and was more of a suggested “other” encountered along the way.
From the perspective of a work about succubi, this isn’t that, and if it was the only reason for me to like this work, I’d only be about to give it one pitchfork. However, there’s more in the story otherwise. The emotional connections of the characters, the background, the baring of their souls to see what’s in front of them I loved dearly. The erotic moments are a delight, both those in the darker side of things and then when both characters are able to push past their roles and be themselves.
Three and a half out of five pitchforks.
There is heat, there is story, there’s two characters that develop in delicious ways. But there’s little to nothing in Aislynn’s appearance, though really there isn’t much point for her to be in the story anyway. Again, this isn’t a story about succubi, and that[s perfectly fine for the romance and desires that appear.
I just find myself wondering why Aislynn would have let things go as they did, knowing her secret and how she feels about things.
