Plot Summary

To make a living, seventeen-year-old Eloise Wylde helps her alcoholic dad cheat during poker games. But when Eloise makes a mistake, her dad’s life is threatened. Either she counts cards for Randy, the infamous drug dealer they’ve cheated, or her Dad dies. As if by magic, Eloise stumbles upon the green-eyed Light, who has an even darker past than herself. He promises to save her dad if she strikes a deal with him. However, his calm and collected personality hides a shadowy secret. Eloise agrees and Light plunges her into a world where the police are animalistic, mermaids run a black market, and inter-dimensional portals resemble airports. When Eloise realizes she must choose between her anticipated reunion with her dad or saving Light from a grim fate, she discovers love is like sealing a demonic contract–it can kill you.

Book Review

The following review was originally published by Tera on her Blog, A Succubi's Tale on October 17, 2025

Eloise doesn’t have a lot to find light in. The world is dark around her, the problems never seem to end. But finding Light, discovering that there is more around her than she expected, could change everything for her. She might even bring herself to love.

The work is a very complicated tale of self-discovery, fantasy, myth and adventure with a little bit of a romance for the main characters that’s teased here and there. The plot is quite convoluted at times, the characters have a lot of depth and emotion as well. It is a very engrossing read, if at times some of the characters make choices that aren’t really the best and they are well aware of that .

The succubus of the work, Melina, just fascinates me. She’s not evil, but more a very old being of power who speaks in a way that seems emotionally missing something, but at the same time, she’s so very enlightened. There is one scene of her walking with Eloise which took my breath away. It seems like just a conversation at first, but then evolves into a telling discussion of love, light, darkness and what one wishes for. The way Melina speaks, the longing in her words, the narrative of her walking, looking over her shoulder and all else, it’s just one of the most amazing pieces of writing in telling of the longing of a succubus.

Three and a half out of five pitchforks.

The work ends a bit oddly and leaves a question or three in its wake, but I think that added to the flavor of the story so well too. It’s a story with a succubus as one of the minor characters, but with that said Melina is a fascinating character to me. I wish there had been more time spent on learning about her, telling more about her past. It’s a remarkable story and well worth a read.
