Book Review

A chance encounter releases Lilith and her brother Malachai into a world unprepared for their evil. Suffering untold takes hold and few are untouched by their powers. But in all of the darkness, a small flame of light burns and seeks to end their reign however it can.
The work is a mixture of fantasy adventure and a bit of horror around the edges which creeps in from time to time to remind the reader just how evil Lilith and Malachai are. Very much not an erotic story, the focus is less on either Lilith and Malachai being creatures of sex or temptation and more just being evil demons on Earth. Throughout the story, their actions upon the world at large are skimmed over and in doing so there’s a lot of story that just never sees expansion on.
Lilith is very much a stereotypically evil succubus, her personality is driven by her evil nature and as such she’s very unlikeable. With that said, there’s no character development beyond what she is at the beginning of the story and there were many opportunities for that to happen.
Similarly, Malachai is described as an incubus, but he’s more of a devil or demon without any nuance and depth. A means to an end and that’s mainly in giving Lilith someone to plot and rage with. Again there’s more than could have been done with him and there’s a hint of that towards the end of the story. But it just didn’t happen and if really needed to be as it did with Lilith herself.
The work is in need of some serious editing, especially for what the author sells this work for, it’s too uneven, lacking in emotion or passion and far too often reads like a summary of a larger story. As such, there is a lot of story, plot and character development not touched on and it really needs to be.
As for the book summary the author provides, that really has next to nothing to do with the work itself. Beyond that, a single sentence to catch attention really won’t do well. More so when it seems so very deceptive with regards to the work as a whole.
Two and a half out of five pitchforks.
The work ends in a way that was telegraphed from the start and that’s fine for the work overall. But with that said, it’s too abrupt, leaves a lot of story hanging and unexplored. Beyond that, there’s feeling of something like a jump scare and it doesn’t work by far. With all the story tries to do, the failing is the editing which needed to do more to make this work live up to what it offered. How things end does leave the door open for a follow on story, but with that said the plot is telegraphed by the ending here. There are possibilities however and if the author can breathe life into the story, then they might have something here.
