Book Review

The following review was originally published by Tera on her Blog, A Succubi's Tale on December 13, 2022

Any adventure begins with a question and where that takes you depends on if you really want the answer. Lilly and Dana however don’t know what they are looking for, but it’s not a good thing and what it will cost them is more precious than they know.

The work is a fantasy-based plot set in a modern age. Numerous beings such as succubi, zombies and others appear both as main and recurring characters throughout. Mainly adventure themed, there are some erotic aspects which add notes to the overall story and don’t interfere with it.

The plot is complex, involving many threads that eventually pull together to reveal the evil that exists and how that is battled. It isn’t, by any means, simple or a hand wave solves the problem. There is loss, heartache and more which serves to add to the character development that is very well done.

Lilly, the succubus of the work, is something of a cypher. She speaks in riddles and circles, keeping her true self hidden away. She’s not a stereotypical succubus by any means, falling somewhere between being almost good and almost evil much of the time. But that’s her appeal in the story overall. She’s willing to do what matters for those she cares about, but she’s also sure that everything is shades of light and dark. That dance between the two is very well done and I enjoyed the most internal moments when Lily expresses what she really thinks.

There’s a lot about Lily that isn’t touched on as much as I would have liked. Overall, this is well written and interesting story, but there is part of it veiled off and left unsaid. This isn’t an overall issue, but with the stuttering starts and stops about this being a series or not, it would be a shame that things end here.

Four out of five pitchforks.

Perhaps a short novella which focuses on Lily might be something to consider, especially how her story closes here. It’s really a question of focusing to a smaller intimate story and seeing where that goes.
