Book Review

The following review was originally published by Tera on her Blog, A Succubi's Tale on January 5, 2024

There’s something that doesn’t feel right about the town Jonathan finds himself in. Being summoned in his line of work isn’t unusual, but the town wants nothing to do with him. If that wasn’t enough, his host seems odd, their home holds darkness within its walls. But he’s there for a purpose. But that purpose isn’t what he thinks it is and he will find himself at the mercy of forces he might not be able to resist or have the desire to.

The work is a mixture of erotica and horror with an emphasis on the horror aspects in the storytelling. The writing moves the story along at a very quick pace, leaving no time for Jonathan to figure out what’s going on, who’s in control, and find a means to deal with the forces which surround him. The characters have purpose, whether good or evil, and they remain in those roles as events come to a climax by the end of the work.

While there are erotic moments, there’s really little heat in them. They feel forced, which is part of the storytelling, and it’s reasonably clear just what the danger is soon after Jonathan meets Elizabeth and Kate. It felt a bit odd, considering who Jonathan is, that he wouldn’t recognize the danger sooner, but that’s part of the plot and so the fall becomes expected and a bit rote at points.

This really isn’t meant to have the succubi be sensual beings, there’s no need for them to be passionate or have a sliver of passion either. They are a means to an end which Jonathan becomes ensnared by. As such, the darker aspects of succubi come to the fore and what transpires just didn’t have heat for me and passed by quickly as the story passed the moment by.

The succubi of the work, Kate and Elizabeth, are just odd from the beginning. For Kate it makes sense, but Elizabeth feels off from the moment she appears. While their more obvious aspects are muted, the way they are described, their dialogue, how overly their sexual natures are displayed to Jonathan, felt too rushed.

I think some time invested in taking the overall setting from normality to horror, to turn Elizabeth from ordinary to succubus in a slow burn would have added more depth to her character. As for Kate, from the first moment her character is stereotypical horror movie dangerous, which she had to be. But that’ just telegraphed a bit too much and that felt like a shame.

From an erotica perspective, there’s a lot to be desired. Some of the mind control aspects are very subtle and they work to add the feeling of unease which settles into the work. The focus is mainly on domination and control overall and there’s little shading of what the succubi want and how they get that, once Jonathan is too deep into the events.

The story nonetheless is gripping, Jonathan’s battle and the revelations he is forced to face set a strong tone. As a work of succubus horror, it’s well told. I just feel like there’s something missing between the first encounter and the last where a bit more depth to all of the characters would have meant something more.

Three and a half out of five pitchforks.

While there are succubi characters in this work, this is a story themed more towards horror than erotica. That works well, the writing is well done and it’s very much a page turner. However the succubi are rather stereotypical in their personalities. While things conclude in a rather final way, there’s still a number of dangling threads left behind. As this is the first work of a new series, I find myself wondering if something here lingers going forward and what might develop from that.
