Plot Summary
Growing up under the oppressive rules of the Temple of Purity, all Renna wanted to do was escape and become an adventurer… and maybe experience a kiss and a cuddle without her Divine Chastity Belt going off.
So, when a God offered her the chance to become his Champion to win a wager, she took it.
Little did she know that the combination of Demon and Chaos blood in her veins would create something new.
Now, she's in a race with one of the greatest adventurers in the world to reach level 100. Luckily, her class has some… unique options for leveling.
Book Review
The following review was originally published by Tera on her Blog, A Succubi's Tale on August 18, 2024
Renna isn’t exactly happy with her role. Things could be better, a little more fun and, perhaps, a little more exciting in many ways. A deal offered gives her a chance to become more than she is, but what she becomes is completely unexpected. Now the game is on and it’s going to take everything she has to win and more than she ever could know.
The work is a very long and very detailed adventure story with quite a lot of erotic scenes mixed in along the way. The characters are interesting, if quirky and odd as a whole, some being written to be extremely over the top to the point they are caricatures of what otherwise could be far more interesting ones.
As this is a LitRPG story, it tends to get lost along the way with the main character, Renna, endlessly thinking about her stats and powers. Pages are taken up with her thinking about how to upgrade things and so on. This, at least for me, creates a problem In that the story narrative starts, the characters become involved in something and then the work comes to a screeching halt to deal with stats. I find this just make me flip pages and skim over these moments to get to the story again.
It’s a shame because Renna, who becomes the succubus of the work, is interesting and I rather like her as a whole. She has no horns or tail, at least not as yet, but perhaps in time that will change. There’s a lot of tail use in the work as it is after all. While she is referred to as a succubus, she hides that away for the most part and it becomes something of an afterthought. Being that this is the first work in a series, I expect that will change and she will become more succubus like In time.
The tone of the work is rather teasing and amusing overall. Certainly the narrative of the stat pages has a sense of humor in the descriptions which, while cute, really felt poorly used. It’s one thing to describe a power and another to make a comment which feels odd considering the setting and the dialogue the characters use.
Two and a half out of five pitchforks.
It’s an odd read and overall I expected more than what appeared. Where the series goes from here I hope gives more time towards Renna becoming a succubus and using her powers as well. Beyond that, more focus in the storytelling would be nice. It might even be an idea to step back from all of the stat repetitiveness too. There has to be a better way to show them and be less jarring too.
