Book Review
The following review was originally published by Tera on her Blog, A Succubi's Tale on January 3, 2023
Alice is alone and in need of finding her soulmate. A friend offers a means to cope, a ritual that will, hopefully give her some relief from the need within. Thought to be nothing, when the succubus Neryssa appears, Alice finds her irresistible to her own desires. But that it is a two-way street and both may discover they are perfect for each other.
The work is a lovely and emotional tale of lesbian love and understanding leading towards a story that just captivated me completely. It’s not the erotica that makes this so compelling, however. What matters here is the character development, the emotional context and what that brings to the story.
Neryssa, the succubus of the work, seems to be the classical dominant succubus character to which Alice is drawn to completely. She’s wonderfully erotic and seductive in the beginning which brings the heat to the story. But it’s the reveal of her real self, the truth of her existence that matters the most. It’s that true self through which Neryssa becomes perfect in her role and place in the story.
There’s a point where sex alone doesn’t give the characters life in a story. But going past that, revealing their flaws, the needs they have, and their dreams that takes a work and makes it so very rare a delight to read.
The erotica is a slow burn with some flashes of D/s relationships that feels right for both characters. It’s not over the top, it gives life to the sadness of their lives and how being together overcomes that.
The writing is exceptional, the characters are fully formed, and the story uses that well to make them more so. It’s a tale of lost love and found love which I just enjoyed dearly. If there is one issue I have with the work it’s the page leading to the epilogue and the way Neryssa returns. There’s a disconnect in the story here, a promise made to Alice that doesn’t quite get fulfilled. Saying one thing and then having the story drag Alice along until the climax felt wrong and didn’t do the story a lot of good. But with that said, there’s far too much otherwise to love and enjoy.
Four out of five pitchforks.
I simply adored the story from beginning to end. I do wish that there would have been more told about Neryssa than there was. More to the point, the ending could have been more than it was. Still, where things end allows for more storytelling and it would be good to see what comes after for Neryssa and Alice. Love found should be explored and it’s what begins but doesn’t have the story fully told.
