Book Review

The following review was originally published by Tera on her Blog, A Succubi's Tale on August 9, 2024

The universe is filled with secrets, both of light and dark. For those who find themselves on the edge of such places, the battle is within and without. Seeking the truth can be freeing or cast one into a pit of despair. Sometimes all that matters is the ones we love and hold dear.

The work is a rather complex mix of horror and supernatural themes which builds a mythos around the main characters and then explores it. It isn’t really a work of horror however, as the setting and events tend towards exploration of the supernatural and how the characters deal with the truths they confront.

It’s a bit tepid overall, the writing feels like parts and pieces of the story were not told. Further to that, the story is told in narrative only and there’s no dialogue to speak of. As a result the descriptions matter more here, but overall they don’t quite manage to express well what’s happening.

The incubus of the work is a shadow, lurking in the background and appearing to provide a bit of shock and to endanger the characters. Somewhat stereotypically evil, there’s really not a lot of development save for increasing the threat as it needs to be before the climax and final confrontation.

The work needs anther editing pass, mainly to make the story read better. It just feels odd and lost around the edges overall. Given that, as the story is all narration with no dialogue, perhaps that’s something to consider as well.

Three out of five pitchforks.

The idea is interesting, but somehow something has been lost between the author and what came out on the page which is a shame.
