Plot Summary

Nancy suspected her husband Jim was cheating on her. Changes in her health had changed the dynamics in their marriage, leaving Nancy to wonder if her husband’s meetings with a personal trainer were more focused on the personal aspect and less on the training. Needing to know the truth, Nancy hired Private Investigator Peter Blaylock to find out what her husband was up to. What Peter discovered unmoored his perception of reality.

I continued to watch as I mentally reviewed the possibilities – and there weren’t many. Jim slid off the bed and put his clothes back on. He tossed the robe into the hamper before exiting the room.

I stopped recording before scrambling out of the car to catch his exit from the house. I hid at the corner, waiting for him to appear. I didn’t care if anyone saw me lurking there or not. Part of me wondered what they did after that… whatever that was. Did they sit down and chat over coffee? Maybe discuss how their day went?

None of that could have happened because Jim was out the door and heading down the steps shortly after I reached the corner. I glanced at the porch to see the redhead in the doorway waving goodbye. Jim turned back, a smile still plastered on his face and waved in return.

What the hell did I just see in that room?

Book Review

The following review was originally published by Tera on her Blog, A Succubi's Tale on April 20, 2025

The life of a private investigator is a complex thing. Mystery is but a small part of what comes at you and there’s nothing you can do but find the answers. A question about a husband brings Peter to encounter something fantastic, perhaps impossible to explain. But the real question is what happens when the truth is revealed and those involved can do only one thing. Believe.

The work is mainly a mystery wrapped with a bit of supernatural flavour around the edges to deepen that mystery. It’s not erotica, there is no emphasis of that theme. But it is very much an exploration of desires and needs and what they mean to each soul in the story.

While it is a detective mystery, it’s not film noir by any means. However, that is the core of the story, the detective figuring out a mystery and where that takes them. At times quite lacking in emotion, there is a feeling of the story trying to find itself and the characters within the story making sense of things.

Lori, who can be thought of as the succubus of the work, is the daughter of an incubus and a siren which is a very interesting combination. Not evil, not at all stereotypical, she’s more a businesswoman with a service to offer and that’s what she relates to. With that said, there’s very little of her powers shown or explained and that’s really not a bad thing with the focus of the work. It still would have been nice to learn more about her, but she’s a means to an end, not the story itself.

Four out of five pitchforks.

Lori is a very interesting character and it’s a shame that she wasn’t explored as a character beyond the superficial. The work is very much a one=off, I’m not expecting to see more from this author about her. With that said, she’s intriguing and it would be nice to have her appear again, possibly in a more active role in another story. There’s aspects about her that really need to be explored and should be.
