Plot Summary

Two years after a devastating divorce, James Patterson lives a solitary, empty life. Haunted by his past, he finds comfort in the quiet escape of a small bookstore. One day, a mysterious woman catches his eye, igniting a series of vivid, seductive dreams that begin to consume him. Obsessed with her,

James searches for her again and again, only to discover a truth far darker than his wildest nightmares. The woman he desires is no ordinary lover—she’s a succubus, and she’s been draining his life away, one encounter at a time. Will James escape her deadly embrace, or is it already too late?

Book Review

The following review was originally published by Tera on her Blog, A Succubi's Tale on March 21, 2025

Life is a struggle since James’ divorce came to pass, the days are long, there’s no joy to be found and the darkness is all consuming. A chance encounter with the mysterious Abiko sparks something anew within, but the darkness never lets go and it is closer that he realizes or can explain.

The work reads as story about the transition of the main character from one level of mental struggle with his own darkness to another through the appearance of Abiko, who describes herself as a succubus. It’s not erotica, though there are some moments of passion between the main characters.

Nor is this what one might expect as a succubus story either, as Abiko really doesn’t feel like a succubus. There are aspects of her being possibly one, though there are other mythological beings that could be part of who she is. With that said, Abiko isn’t a traditional succubus, though there is a point at which she tells of consuming him and taking his soul.

It’s the afterwords where James deals with his past, what Abiko has done, and the effects she has had. The story then takes a very unexpected turn and what follows is very much a character development story that results in an ending that offers thoughts to readers with their own demons to think about.

Four out of five pitchforks.

It’s less a story about a succubus than it is a story with a succubus around the edges to push the story and the main character towards a resolution. Deeply emotional and there is a undeniable anguish throughout, but it isn’t at all about the succubus herself save to be the point of change in the story and then vanish into the night from where she came.
