Plot Summary
Natalia Whateley is drawn deeper into the strange spell of the Book of the Ecstasies. Now the mistress of her own mansion, she is free to pursues her own pleasures, however she wants. Natalia’s story continues after her encounter with Sartraeus, which leaves her aching for more delights. A pair of men delight her, then her cat reveals a surprise which lays the path towards something that might not be exactly what she expects. Her devil isn’t quite what he seems and Natalia finds that his will leaves a mark upon her.
The work carries on directly from the prior story, dealing with the aftermath of Natalia’s encounter with Sartraeus, the effects the book is having on her. Sartraeus doesn’t really return, save for in passing and what remains is more an exploration of Natalia’s desires overcoming her, and her eyes being opened to the magic that is at her fingertips.
Without spoiling the story, I thought the reveal was quite well done, I liked the new character that pops into things. Their attitude is interesting, almost genie-like and the erotica that comes from that is quite delicious.
Much like the first work, the two erotica scenes are quite different in how they play out. The first, a trio, has a very porn movie feel which has some heat and some moments of delight in spite of some of the things that unfold.The second is more passionate, more romantic and I liked that more simply because it allowed the two characters to breathe rather than come in a heaving rush.
The storytelling is very good, there’s as much to enjoy as the first work in the series. There’s quite a lot of character development, some plots are opened and a few answers are found. The only part of the story that didn’t quite work for me was the ending. There’s a twist in it that didn’t appeal to me, even if it made sense overall. It’s also an abrupt ending, almost a cliffhanger, which demands something to follow and take the story to the next level it is meant to be.
This isn’t really a story in which there is an incubus, though I do ponder Natalia, if she’s being corrupted in some way, possibly being towards a fate as a succubus. It would fit, bit should things turn that way, I’m hoping there’s not a bad end that comes with that possibility.
Three and a half out of five pitchforks.
Some interesting turns in the story, the ending was, I have to admit, a bit troublesome for me, if for no other reason than the sudden turn things took. I’d like to see another part to the series, but at the time of this review, that hadn’t appeared. The series still has promise, the tension is building, but as some point there’s enough of that and the story needs to take a breath and move onwards towards some kind of resolution.
