Plot Summary

Venture into the ominous and the macabre with Hellbound, a chilling collection of horror and dark fantasy stories that blurs the lines between damnation and reality. Featuring cursed small towns, malevolent supernatural forces, hideously evil humans (and one likeable succubus for a bit of comic relief), these hellish tales will take you to the darkest corners of reality and beyond.

  • An ill-fated couple's road trip through the woods turns into a nightmarish quest for survival.
  • A troubled young man fearing hell will do anything to get absolution from his priest. Anything.
  • A woman settles a humiliating old score and reveals a dark family secret along the way.
  • A creepy trick-or-treater forces a bad man to confront his past - and fear for his future.
  • A couple's desperate attempt for neighborly acceptance takes an unexpected turn.
  • A desperate man battles to change his fate in a forsaken town where escape is only an illusion.

Many of these stories have been previously published in horror magazines and anthologies, showcasing M.B. Manteufel’s talent for writing imaginative stories with vivid prose and unexpected twists. Join her on this journey into the abyss. Ready yourself to be Hellbound.

Book Review

The following review was originally published by Tera on her Blog, A Succubi's Tale on February 4, 2025

The story Bad Hair Day will be my focus as it is the singular work in which a succubus appears. With that said: Succubi are so very particular about their looks, some are focused perhaps far too much on their hair. When the stylists of hell get it wrong, there’s nothing more dangerous than a succubus with the frizzies, or worse.

I just adored this work from beginning to end, my smile never leaving throughout and honestly it was just perfect in every way. Very much a comedy of errors for Serena, the succubus of the story, it’s just such a deliciously silly tale by far. The hair disasters get worse and worse, Serena makes a choice to tell someone about the mess, and that doesn’t quite go as well as she’d expected. As for the ending… that’s something I’ll save for those that I hope will give this work a read.

For this lovely story, four out of five pitchforks.

The collection as a whole, save for the story about Serena, is quite dark with a horror edge to it. While the stories tell that well and it is a varied series of tales being told, they had far less appeal to me. That is, of course, because my interest is in succubi and incubi for one, and that I don’t find horror stories all that interesting for the other.

For the work as a whole, three and a half out of five pitchforks.

For those that enjoy dark fiction and horror, it is a really well told series of stories that I am very sure will be enjoyed. For me I find myself wanting a larger story about Serena, about succubi in her story universe, and perhaps to see if she will ever have a really good hair day.

Because, that is, of course, such an important thing.
