Book Review

The following review was originally published by Tera on her Blog, A Succubi's Tale on February 28, 2021

Derek knows nothing about his past, and as for his family, that’s something he never expected to matter. But to some it does and when Daria set her sights on him, the love Derek finds might not be enough to save everything.

The work is a young adult fantasy adventure with a strong coming of age theme overall. The mystery that surrounds the main character carries through much of the story, bits and pieces coming to light overtime. There’s also a rich story universe built around telling the main characters story and those that are entangled with him. Well written, there’s quite a lot to like overall.

However, the succubus of the work, Daria, and the other succubi and incubi characters that appear, are rather unappealing overall. They are part of the story, but as for being succubi or incubi, their nature is muted and rather grey. Their actions are expected, the events around them are somewhat rote in the threat they present.

It’s a fantasy adventure mystery with a bit of a succubus theme and characters around the edges to be a threat to the main characters. The story is interesting, but the succubi, and bare mention of incubi, make them very stereotypical and a bit two-dimensional for me.

Three out of five pitchforks.

Overall, it’s not really that much of a succubus story, and it’s a shame that wasn’t explored in a deeper way. Otherwise, it is an intriguing read, if a bit rushed at times perhaps. With how complicated this work is, perhaps a bit more time spent in making the underlying threat more telling would have been a good thing.
