Book Review
The following review was originally published by Tera on her Blog, A Succubi's Tale on March 13, 2016
Trisha finds herself at the tender mercies of Victoria, a succubus who has taken an interest in her and those around her. A few suggestions, a little whispered seduction leads to Trisha falling under Victoria’s spell. But that’s just the beginning, for Victoria has plans for her new playmate, and when they come to be Trisha won’t be innocent, or the same, again.
The story focuses on Trisha and how she is corrupted slowly through her encounter with Victoria, as such the work is somewhat less a story about succubus seduction than it is about succubus corruption. That does mean the story has a focus upon that transformation, both physical and mental, which is written well by the author and I enjoyed much of how things developed. Save for there being the appearance of hooves mind you, but that’s my own personal quirk.
That said, the transformation doesn’t happen at the snapping of fingers. There is a well thought out series of small seductions and changes that Trisha goes through at the hands of Victoria. The mental shifting has some lovely heat, how Trisha’s thoughts change is interesting and the twisting and turning in that change works well. Her physical transformation is told in how the things that Victoria does, how they entice Trisha to give herself to Victoria through the pleasure she feels, is also a nice mix of heat and story.
Trisha’s final form is described deliciously, I have the most interesting image of her in my mind, though her tail bothers me about as much has her hooves do. Still, her overall appearance as described is quite succubus-like and her new self falls into being a succubus quite well. The only thing that seems a little odd about her final form and thoughts, is that there’s something missing along the way.
Following Trisha’s becoming a succubus, she passes on the gift Victoria gave her to another and it is at that point in the story that it lost me. I didn’t find the latter part of the work all that hot, interesting, or seductive. It was something more like revenge, and that just didn’t interest me.
Overall the erotica mixes with the story well, Trisha and Victoria are well fleshed out, if somewhat stereotypical in who they are. But there’s really not a lot told about Victoria, why she appears, what she wants, other than the obvious. It feels like there is more story to be told about her all things considered, including a comment by Victoria about her palace elsewhere. It would have made for a more interesting story if how Victoria got there would be told, what she did before meeting Trisha was revealed more than it was at the end of the work.
The other stereotypical thing is that the plot as a whole just is something that has been done a lot, in a lot of different ways, and I didn’t feel like the author managed something new, or really different in the core story, having to put their effort into the erotica and transformation which didn’t change the main problem of this sort of story being so prevalent as a whole.
There’s a very obvious suggestion of the story not being done at the end, where things go from here seeming to be quite obvious as a whole. While the story of Trisha seems to be complete, what comes next could be more of the same, or something more. It’s hard to say which from where this ends.
With all of the good things, there is one major problem. The work needs another editing pass. There are too many spelling mistakes, such as “it’ ” instead of “it’s” which happens a lot. There is also some odd dialogue that just doesn’t sound right either. As well, at one point in Trisha’s transformation, there’s a moment that made me pause and try to figure out in my mind how, physically, such a thing could happen, magic or not.
It’s a shame because I did like so much of the story and the characters, but the editing issues and the final third of the work, which didn’t appeal to me very much, makes it hard to give this work the rating I want to.
Two and a half out of five pitchforks.
The work needs another editing pass, it also could use a bit more about Victoria than her just appearing out of thin air. There’s a story here, it seems to be on the edge of appearing, but it gets lost in the transformation, the corruption and while I liked a lot of that, without a story to back it up, this becomes a much less interesting and erotic work overall. Perhaps there will be another work to follow this one. If that happens, then perhaps that missing story can be told.
