Plot Summary
I learned the truth about Ethan too late. Sooner, and I’d have happily turned him in like I was supposed to do, honoring my—sacred, some would say—duty to Church and State. Nothing in the Empire was hated more absolutely and irredeemably as an incubus except, perhaps, the human who aided one. My parents raised me correctly, my teachers taught me all the right things, but there were situations their training guides hadn’t prepared me for. Dry, textual warnings like, “You may discover it’s your best friend, your roommate, your crush,” didn’t come with guidance for the breathless moment of realization or the sick feeling of dread that followed. They only provided the number for a hotline that I would never, ever call.
