Book Review

The following review was originally published by Tera on her Blog, A Succubi's Tale on May 27, 2025

It’s Halloween and for Jasper and Damien, it’s time to return to the world of mortals and see who catches their eyes and how much fun they are going to have. As for Gabrielle, getting dumped is a pain, but being dragged to a Halloween parry she doesn’t want to go to is a bigger one. At least until she sees Jasper and Damien and then all bets are off.

The work is a slow building hot flash erotic story with a bit of supernatural flair around the edges to add to the heat. While the story is interesting, at times the dialogue reads flat, the characters turn two-dimensional and there are points where things happen, but it’s not clearly understood why. Much like the characters themselves, the story gets lost along the way before the mutual attraction between them draws them into their entanglement and some of the secrets become explained.

The erotica has some lovely heat, but the dialogue feels disconnected at points which takes something away from that. More than anything it’s the tone of the dialogue that gets in the way and just turns the scene away from its passions into being something flat and it really needed not to be.

Jasper and Damien, the incubi of the story, aren’t stereotypical, their banter is a bit forced, but overall they are a good match story wise. They are somewhat expected in their descriptions and view of things, and it felt like they needed to be developed more to give more depth to the story.

The ending seemed to be in a rush, there were a lot of dangling threads left open for one. The other part that bothered me was the shift in tone of the incubi and their attitude which felt like it didn’t work with the events of the story. There’s a relationship created, the characters are connected, but if it’s for a reason of gaining power among the three, that’s a rather thin reason.

Three and a half out of five pitchforks.

As interesting as the story was and the events that happened, there’s really not enough character development overall that I wanted to see. Similarly, at times the emotional notes felt muted or at least seemed oddly lacking and they shouldn’t have been that way. The passion should have come out more, the connections meaning more before the problems started for the trio. There’s a lot to like here, but I think there could have been so much more to delight in.
