Plot Summary

Navigating high school is a Herculean task when you're part demon, part human, and wholly out of place. As the son of an incubus and a mortal, I juggle two lives: one where I blend into the lockers and lectures and another steeped in supernatural legacies and the whispers of infernal kin. Aging slowly and feeling all too deeply, my greatest fear is succumbing to my darker half and the hunger for human souls that comes with it.

My kind has scrubbed sins from mortal spirits for generations, steering humanity away from its darkest impulses. But as the first of my lineage with a soul, I've become the unwilling star of the netherworld, dodging the ambitions of my master demon grandfather and the advances of a persistent succubus, all while fending off the envy of my demonic peers.

Life's monotony in the endless cycle of schools and towns, courtesy of my father's appetite for souls, is broken by Clara Elbert—the fallen queen of high school society. Once at the pinnacle of popularity, Clara's fall from grace has left her a target for bullies and a beacon for the outcasts. Her rainbow hair and retro art defiance signify a spirit not quickly quashed—a spirit that draws me in despite every instinct to remain aloof.

The allure grows as we circle each other, each hiding our scars. She sees me as the new, enigmatic student—smart, kind, and disarmingly cute. But every kiss is a test of restraint, every moment together a battle against my baser urges. With the homecoming dance on the horizon, we hope for a night of magic and normalcy, even as the ghosts of our pasts conspire to tear it all apart. Will we dance under the lights, or will our literal and figurative demons claim the night?

Book Review

The following review was originally published by Tera on her Blog, A Succubi's Tale on September 28, 2025

Tristan knows of himself and what he is, but he never understood what it meant to find someone with a soul brighter than the sun, but as troubled as himself. Life at school is hell on Earth for Clara, a never ending tale of loss and loathing. Perhaps it will take an incubus to show that there is love, and for her to give Tristan the same gift in return.

The work is a character development story wrapped around the main characters coming of age, finding themselves, and facing their darkness and the darkness which swirls around them. Well written, the characters have strong voices, they aren’t static, and by the end, both main characters are very far removed from where they started to what they have become.

Through the storytelling, both Tristan and Clara’s lives are expired, taken apart, and their truths revealed. Those truths are so very hard to see, the subjects are achingly difficult for them to reveal and it’s so very much telling how they came to terms with each other and their pasts to make the chance for a future to come to pass.

Tristan, the incubus of the story, is very unique, having his own soul and resisting his nature, especially with Clara. It’s that desire mixed with the need to protect her that gives him such a presence in the work. He does reveal his true self, tells about his world, and in doing so adds a layer of storytelling that merges with the main arc to connect with the climax very tellingly.

There are other incubi and succubi characters as well, Tristan’s cousin Dominic is very unlikeable at the start, the reasons make sense at the time, but when the truth comes out, e’s redeemed and becomes such a better character than he was. The same cannot be said for Delilah, who reads very much as an evil stereotypical succubus and honestly was more and more dislikable as the story went on. It’s one thing to be a seductress, it’s quite another for what she was revealed to be. The mystery of the book is Lilith who is mentioned in passing a few times, but never appears. It’s a shame really as how the story closes, it would have been interesting to see her as the force she would be, and what she might have done.

Four out of five pitchforks.

The work ends in a delightful way, even if there are a number of character and plot threads left a bit dangling. I would like to see a follow on work, to look into the world of succubi and incubi in a deeper way. To follow Clara and Tristian in their lives and see where that takes them and what they dace together. With that said, it is an engrossing tale, very much a page turner with a lot to think about, which makes this the more wonderful a tale.
