Book Review
The following review was originally published by Tera on her Blog, A Succubi's Tale on October 6, 2024
There are no dreams for Maya, they are all nightmares from which she cannot escape. The truth behind them cannot possibly be real, but when her dreams bleed into reality, there’s no end to be found.
The work is a very short, what I tend to call a pamphlet in length, erotic hot flash with incubus theme aspects to tie the story together. It’s somewhat abrupt in the storytelling, there’s really no time within the story to pause and reflect on what is happening to the main character Maya. The erotic heat falls into adult movies levels and at the same time it falls into being very over the top.
The incubus of the work, Ryan, is just that side of being monstrous and cruel and he is so throughout the story. He is eminently dislikable from the start and by the end of the story that doesn’t get any better. He’s a means to an end, to tie the story into the erotic theme at the core of things, and beyond that he’s just evil for the sake of being so.
The only part of the work which interested me was the idea of the incubus oil. It’s described in passing, but otherwise there’s really nothing revealed about it and that’s a shame. Similarly Ryan’s finding it, using it, and so on, isn’t explored either. It’s all just a vague answer to why things happened as they did, but otherwise there’s nothing there.
It does make me wonder about a follow on story, possibly with the appearance of something called succubus oil, and Maya discovering it. Basing such a story more on the transformation, focusing on the character being transformed from beginning to the end result would be fascinating. It’s that gradual change and what erotica can be found in that which is missing here and that’s a shame.
One out of five pitchforks.
This could have been a lot more interesting a story than it is. The underlying idea of the transformation is something that should have been explored. As the story is, it’s focused mainly on the sex, the story rushes to the obvious ending, and it just leaves a lot to be desired.
