Plot Summary

In the realm of Purgatory, a domain untouched by the divine or wicked, a memoryless soul awakens to an unexpected calling. Thrust into the role of King, he must navigate a world teetering on the edge of redemption and oblivion.

Guided by a celestial priest and a fiery succubus, the soul, now known as 'Boss,' is plunged into a sea of faces, each carrying their own tales of regret and hope. As he delves into their stories, his actions will determine their final path - a chance at redemption or a plunge into the eternal void.

Beyond his imposing role, Boss faces a personal journey. Haunted by the emptiness of his own past, he seeks to uncover the mystery of his existence, all while transforming Purgatory from a realm of judgment to a sanctuary of second chances.

Prepare to delve into the grey expanse of Purgatory, where regret can bloom into redemption, and a nameless soul can rise to be a King.

Book Review

The following review was originally published by Tera on her Blog, A Succubi's Tale on November 12, 2023

Everything in the universe needs purpose, a reason for them to strive for something better. A soul lost, a place called Purgatory, a man of light, a woman of temptation. All have their needs and wants. Perhaps together they can transform part of the universe into something better for all.

The work is told in a narrative form with no dialogue to speak of. Overall the work sets up the main characters situation, adds in the character of light, Micheal, and the succubus of darkness, Sultana. They all have their own ideas of how Purgatory should be run, and it’s how the main character uses their suggestions to shape Purgatory which forms the work.

It’s not a work of erotica by any means however. In a way this work reads like the introduction to a roleplaying game which explains to the characters what the rules are and then sends them on their way. Written in a narrative style, the interactions of the characters and the telling of what happens us told from a slight distance which brings a seeming disconnect between the events and the emotions that are encountered. The world building is very interesting, the characters, though not really deeply explored, offer a lot as well.

Sultana, described as a succubus, is rather unique overall. Her physical form is glossed over, as are all of the characters. But it’s her actions, the temptation she offers, how she seeks a point of view opposed to Micheal, that gives flavour to events. Not purely evil, there’s a shades of grey to her that I thought was delightful. Hopefully that will be explored further and will, along with the other main characters, gives them growth.

The work could use another editing pass, there’s something of a lack of emotional impact at times which seems out of place. At the same time, expanding on the descriptions of the characters, telling more about why they decide on a choice or press for it, would add an interesting aspect as well.

Two and a half out of five pitchforks.

Sultana seems to be interesting in a temptress sort of way, and there’s a physical and character expressiveness to her that suggests she’s a kind of succubus. But overall this is more of a narrative to set up the series going forwards than anything else. I’d like to see more about her, to hear her voice and that of the other characters as well. It’s a unique setting and story idea which seems to have a lot of promise to explore. Hopefully it will be.
