Book Review

The following review was originally published by Tera on her Blog, A Succubi's Tale on September 19, 2023

There is darkness all around Syren, Alpha and Omega and there’s no escaping it. Schemes are afoot to bring the most evil things to them no matter the cost. If they can only find their way together, to discover their truth and make it real, their future and their hope might change their world forever.

The work is a mixture of supernatural mystery and adventure with a very strong erotic theme that flows throughout the storytelling. It’s complex, the characters have many issues and problems within themselves which aren’t made a lot better by the forces in the background wanting their revenge. There are quite a number of plots running throughout which are both focused on the main characters and at the same time tied deeply into the overall series of books.

As such, the story moves quickly, taking viewpoints from the main characters and minor ones which overall works well. The mystery around Syren specifically very much presses on the main characters and with that comes a cold, seemingly final fate for her. How that unfolds tells a lot about her and there’s a good deal of character development by the end of the work as a result. Similarly for Alpha and Omega, at the beginning they are somewhat unlikable, but that shifts over time as the story reveals their truths and they have to deal with what they have been involved in and what they really want.

Syren, the succubus of the work is something of a cypher for most of the story. There’s a lot going on around her which places her into the situation she finds herself in. There are glimpses of her succubus nature which I thought worked well and showed she wasn’t at all stereotypical. the revelations about her worked well.

Alpha and Omega, the incubi of the story are, without question, very dominant and very driven by their incubus natures. Again, they are not stereotypical, but it takes a long time for their characters to find themselves, which is a core part of the story. It’s in the coming to terms with Syren, to understand what they did before matters little with who she is and when that finally comes they are far better characters for that.

It’s a bit difficult to sort out the characters, the relationships and what’s going on in this story universe without having read prior works in the series. You don’t absolutely have to, but I needed to go back and read number of other works to sort out in my mind the story better. Having done that, the work flowed better and the characters made more sense to me.

It does feel very rushed, which I think is a reflection of the characters and the events going on around them. The story universe is vast and very detailed which means events unfold, characters appear, and the explanations are a bit skimmed over to move things along to the next crescendo. That said, the raw emotion between the characters, how so many secrets drive the story forwards adds a very unique flavour which I did enjoy.

While Syren is a succubus and Alpha and Omega are very much incubi, the actual exploration of what that means I think needed to be explored more than it was. There’s no question of their sexual powers, that’s very clear and the erotic scenes are so very hot and deliciously told. But there are questions Syren seems not to find answers for and as for the incubi, their sexual prowess isn’t in question, but their decision making felt so very wrong.

Still, that’s sort of the point of the story, the mystery around Syren, who’s behind what’s going on and why. There’s a rush to get from one issue or problem to the next, one disaster befalls them and then the character development is pushed aside. The questions around Syren keep coming back and some of the mystery isn’t really explained well, at least for me. I dearly loved Syren for one reason in particular that those that know me will understand. Perhaps it’s not a complete happy ever after, but for the main characters the close of the work is their beginning.

Three and a half out of five pitchforks.

The story closes in a place that both brings satisfaction and a bit of sadness as well. It’s a very unique piece of storytelling and once I found a connection to the story, it quickly became a page turner. I still feel that understanding the series universe helps a lot, perhaps a bit of setting up the universe before the story began might have helped in that. I would have liked something more of what happened afterwards for Syren, Alpha and Omega, perhaps to bring closure to their relationship in more detail than there was.
