Plot Summary

For five centuries, Mil'nezen had fulfilled her duties as a succubus. The list of those that performed the Dark Pact was ever growing and the host of succubi who attended those requests was dwindling. Bored of her existence, Mil'nezen went about her daily couplings until she met Scott.

Scott Thompson was having a bad day. The party next door seemed like a great way to end the night with a bang. But his day continues to get worse, until he encounters the otherworldly creature, Mil'nezen. A chance meeting under unusual circumstances leads to a night of wild love.

For the first time in half a millennia, Mil'nezen feels something beyond the act itself. But can Scott survive the love of a succubus?

Book Review

The following review was originally published by Tera on her Blog, A Succubi's Tale on October 24, 2023

The universe works in mysterious ways and the succubi are not immune from its whims. Mil’nezen has a role to play, so Lilith demands of her and the few succubi there are. Everything seems the same, there is nothing beyond her grey existence so it seems. But Scott seems different somehow, something changed when Mil’nezen was with him. Soon they will both discover that things are not as they expected them to be, nor will they ever again.

The work is a very complex mixture of adventure, mystery, passion, need and want which is wrapped in the mythos of the succubi found within the pages. While there are moments of passion, both found in pleasure and in the need within each character, there’s wonderful teasing bits of humour that delighted me throughout. This isn’t a work that focuses on the erotica alone, though that which appears contains heat and passion which matches the characters themselves.

It’s very much a character driven story which explores all of the characters and gives each the time to tell their part to the reader, whether for good or bad. Each speaks in a clearly distinct way, their needs and desires take them towards the climax of the work and by that point, where they end up is refreshingly telling. Similarly, for the succubi, their sexuality doesn’t form who they are, it is part of them, being important as it is, but there’s more than that to each which fleshes them out and makes them anything but two dimensional in nature.

The main succubus of the work, Mil’nezen, seems somehow lost at the beginning, but once finding her path with Scott, the main character, the life that was missing in her turns to fire. Her passion, the goal she sees before her, adds layers to her personality and it’s an amazing character arc to watch unfold. Lilith, best described as the darkness in the story, is as passionate in herself, her focus makes sense in the story as well. But it’s the plots and plans she drives, the past events she was at the focus of when revealed that make her something more. While she is so very dark, she is not a simple cardboard villain, which works really well.

This can be said of all succubi in the work, none are paper tigers or without being given breath and life. They are core to the story, they are transformed by it and in being so are wonderful in their own ways. While they have aspects of what would be expected of succubi, there’s more to their mythos than what might be expected, Their story is very different, if starting with Lilith as are most succubi stories. They are dearly unique and I found that aspect of them, and the history of both the succubi and incubi, engrossing and deliciously so.

The writing is very good overall, certainly the moments of snide commentary from Mil’nezen brought delight. Overall, the dialogue has the heat and passion needed to tell a story like this, save for a few points where Scott’s musings and how they are described did make me sigh in disappointment. While that’s part of his character, it just made a few points feel less for being so.

I would have liked more time spent in telling of Mil’nezen and the other succubi’s past overall. Similarly, there’s fleeting mentions of the incubi which honestly could have used more exploration. It’s the fleshing out around the edges of the mythos that’s missing. That doesn’t mean the story isn’t gripping and a page turner. It means that I wanted more than was revealed, which really is a good thing.

Four out of five pitchforks.

The work ends in a way that is mostly satisfying, giving a path for another work to follow in several ways. It’s a bit abrupt in the ending, feeling like something was removed between the climax of the conflict and the aftermath. Perhaps a postscript might have helped in that to show what came next, even if only to explore where the main characters are.

A wonderful work, the characters are captivating by far. It carries the reader along and from the start is a page turner and well worth considering for those that enjoy both succubi erotica, but more importantly, stories which explore their nature and mythos.
