Book Review

The following review was originally published by Tera on her Blog, A Succubi's Tale on October 10, 2023

Desires can bring pleasure, but they can bring about one’s downfall. One can be preyed upon by their needs and those creatures that feed upon them. Perhaps they will be playthings, perhaps simply prey. Whichever the fate, no-one will be the same afterwards.

As this is a collection of works, and only the first two have succubus aspects, they will be the focus of this review. The rating will be for the work as a whole.

The first work, overall, is the strongest of the three by far. There’s a great deal of world building which set the scene and mood that was delightful. The erotic aspects before Lilith reveals her true self are captivating and I enjoyed the seductive aspects as well as the more dominant ones. At the point of Lilith revealing herself, which was honestly one of the best transformation erotica scenes I have read in sometime, the story became not exactly horror and, honestly, how things unfolded worked really well.

Lilith, the succubus of this work, was delicious in her temptation, control and sensuality. Her succubus form is rather unique and how she controls the other character of the story and has her way with him was something wonderful. I’m not sure she can be really called evil as how she acts and what she does seems to suggest she’s something more naughty than anything else.

It’s in her personality and actions that I found things to be the most interesting. The heat in the erotica is well told, the domination aspects are explored well. Even when things turn a bit dark, the sensuality of her character remains and shapes the events that lead to the close of the story.

This is the one work where I found myself wanting to know more about Lilith, to see what comes next or what was before. Taking this short work and turning it into a larger book would be something to think about as there seems to be so much hinted at about Lilith and needing, I think, to be explored.

The second work has it’s delights as well, but it is a darker story overall. There is heat in the erotic moments, the world building is as well told as the first work. It is however quite a bit more dark in both the succubus Dinah and in what happens by the close of the story.

It’s not exactly past the pale in an erotic horror aspect to be clear, but the ending felt a bit of a shame overall. Dinah’s sexuality and seduction of the main character told a unique and interesting story which offered a lot. But the ending I’m not sure needed to be the way it was.

Dinah, the succubus of the work, tends to be more evil than naughty as the story unfolded. That works overall well, but again it’s the ending that gave me pause and made me sigh. There’s a far more horrific aspect than in the first work by far. While that isn’t dwelled on, it could have gone in a different direction, possibly turning towards Dinah corrupting the other characters than how things turned out.

Written really well, the characters are not two dimensional by any means. There’s a few points where some of the dialogue needed more heat, but generally it fits the story well. I would have liked all of the stories to be a bit longer overall if only to give more time for telling of the succubi characters and to explore them more fully than there was time to do so.

Three and a half out of five pitchforks.

Overall the collection is delightful in the erotic aspects and the characters are quite interesting. What is a bit less so is where the sensuality and seduction turns towards the horror aspects that didn’t quite appeal to me. I’d be interested in a series about Lilith, seeing more of her nature and aspects as that really seems intriguing. An interesting collection of stories and hopefully there will be something more to follow.
