Book Review

The work is a collection of very short stories, some of them being a bare handful of pages in length. There’s a very wide range of characters, themes and settings overall which are explored along the way. Reading mainly as little snippets of interactions with a bit of heat around the edges, there’s really not a lot of time to explore each story’s universe beyond the moment, which is a little disappointing.
The story Suckled by a Succubus tells of a college student Jessie and her relationship with her advisor Jezebel, a succubus. A bit of history is told, a moment comes where they can meet away from the overbearing college, and then the heat and truths from both appear.
The story reads very much like the beginnings of a larger novel, or a kind of summary of what would happen between them to set things up for the larger story. However, being so very short, there’s not a lot of time spent in telling about Jezebel, the details are a little murky. While she is a succubus, with wings and all, and her personality teases from the pages, things just moved so quickly that I was left wanting to see more of them.
The story sets up a lot of things and puts a lot of pieces in motion which brings me back to thinking that there is something more which could come from this. That’s especially true in the ending that drops such a tease that not exploring that with both Jezebel and Josie seems like such a lost thing to explore.
Given what’s in this story, and really in all of the other works, there’s enough seeds here to create larger novels from that the author really should think about doing so.
For the work as a whole, three and a half out of five pitchforks.
The collection of stories is delightfully witty and fun, even if some pf the puns are a bit over the top. Still, I was amused by a number of the works and I found myself wondering about further stories about these characters.
It’s especially so with Jezebel and Josie’s story being a flash of inspiration and delight, but shading I think a very much lather story and world to explore. If you enjoy quirky stories, this collection is very much worth delving into and being amused by.
